Im seriously considering selling my truck (not the 68) and buying a mid 80s blazer. What should I know about them and to look for? Any advice is appreciated. I definitely want one with a removable top, what years was this available, or was it an option? Im looking at some for the $4000-6000 range.

75 was the last year for full removeable top. 76-91 had the "3/4" top that leaves the cab covered when you pull off the top. Good luck on your search!

keep in mind anything after 87 was fuel injected, too.

700R4s suck at anything prior to 87 as well. honestly, i dont see where a 87+ is better than any 69-91, or a 73-75 since it was brought up. 69-72s were also full convert. either way you're getting a 15+ year old truck. if the 69-75 is in decent condition bodywise, the drivetrains are stronger. IMO relaibility is better than economy any day.

Don't get me wrong, I loved my '75. However, the 4 MPG got old after a while. It turns out a 454/TH400/203 combo w/4.56 gears and 36's is not the best thing for mileage. It went through the mud pretty well, though. Since I have gotten older, little things like A/C, cruise, not stopping every hour for fuel, etc. have become a little more important to me. Right now, an 89-91 Jimmy would be at the top of my list, for a few reasons. Seats, fuel injection, and front end being most of the reason. I also like the fact that you can mount a CD player in the dash without hacking everything all to hell. It is all about personal preference, really.

I have owned a 82 full size Jimmy since 1986. I use it everyday and it is real trustworthy. I have had it repainted and I recently redid the interior (grey to black). It looks like new. There have been some rust issues where the removable roof was leaking and I didn't know it. The windshield was also leaking. I fixed all of that . Used Marinetex on the floors and then POR'd them, I caulked all the seams on the removable top (could have replaced all the gaskets but did not since I don't plan to remove the top.) I believe this truck will last forever with the good care that I give it. TH400 trans is same since 86. Changing the fluid is the secret here. Good luck.

Mike, by caulking the seams, do you mean you caulked the inside where it was coming in? i have seen people do this before, with disastrous results. the water gets trapped under the top, and silently rots away at the tub. you never know it til its too late.

Jeremy: I caulked the outside of the seams. I put down two runs of masking tape on either side of the existing gaskets and then I used a real good grade of automotive black silicone caulk to fill the seam depressions. You can get a real smooth run of silicone
in doing this. It appears as if you are looking at a gasket. This truck has been parked out in the weather all it's life. I didn't realize that the gaskets had started to leak. The water was running down the ceiling panels and then down the roof support posts and then onto the floor. The windshield also had two bad leaks. I will always now watch someone replace a windshield for me. This windshield had almost no windshield sealant in it. I would suggest owners of these Blazers/Jimmys to take a look at the floor pans to make sure that this leaking/rusting problem doesn't exist. I sure didn't know it was going on in my truck. Pat, there was a cheap ($3750) 89 Jimmy, black with grey, at A-auto buyers in Fort Worth. Look in the auto trader under all 89 GMC's, and it should pull up.

Honestly, it took everything I had not to go look at it, because I would have brought it home. My wife is still a little chapped about the 87 IROC convertible that followed me home a couple of months ago. I called about it, though. From the pic online and his description, it would seem hard to go wrong.

4WPW has the cheapest lifts around. I would rather lift it myself, and know that some other monkey hasn't hacked it all to hell. I have had really good luck with their Pro-Comp lifts. Seems like a 4" is around $300, with shocks.

4 Wheel Parts Wholesalers. They usually have a big ad in 4 Wheel and Off Road Magazine, and they have a store in Dallas off of 35 and Industrial (I think). They also sell wheel and tire packages, and install what they sell. I have had excellent luck with them. Unfortunately, I don't have their local number here, but the 800 number in the magazine will get you to the local store. They keep a lot of 73-91 stuff in stock.

Here I go again. Well, the tax man basically kicked me in the A**** and told me to put up or shut up. I am having to sell my blazer for what I need. I've had it placed on here before but now it really needs to go.
It's a 73 K5 350/350/203 w/ 308 gears with approximately 35K miles on a crate engine. There's a 6" K&N filter, 1406 edelbrock carb, edelbrock performer intake, new pumps when engine installed, as well as new hoses and belts. It is converted to HEI with 8.8 wires. Dual exhaust but just old. The interior is clean, I haven't driven it in some time. It has leather power front seats, clean carpet, reupholstered rear seat, all belts, tinted windows, set up for a/c but compressor is missing and heater core needs replacement. Exterior wise...It has some rust in the lower front part of the door, and some bubbling around the rear wheelwell. THe windshield has a new crack! Has a full luggage rack on the roof. It's white with a black top and tan interior. The paint is presentable. It's not lifted. Has white wagon wheels on it but a set of American Racing aluminum 636 wheels will go with it. Also has an extra front shaft, and the reinforcement plates for the steering box that I have not put on. I'm asking 3200 or best offer really I need to sell this. Come help me get out of this tax craziness!
