Mental help needed, please.

Have you looked to see if it may have a block with the pump rod hole drilled? I have seen TBI engines with fuel pump blockoff plates. If I already had the crate engine I would run an electric fuel pump and new intake and put it in before I tried to find another. Other than center-bolt valve covers it visually looks pretty much like a 69-72 307 or 350 so not sure what more "period correct" you are looking for? The late engines leak less oil with the 1-piece rear seal. You will need a 1-pc style flywheel or flexplate. Other than the intake and that, all other accessories will bolt right on.

So... The crate engine that I had did not have a plate where the mechanical pump went it had the 4 bolt holes for the plate but no hole through the block for a push rod or drain back. The jig to drill the hole for the rod and drain back hole to the pan... Was silly expensive, so I opted to sell the crate engine and just either rebuild this one or get a crate engine with the whole for the mechanical pump. Yes I could have run an electric pump but then I'm adding another element to futz with. Why add more variables to the equation? When the simplest route is to be patient and "K.I.S.S." it. I do plan on doing more work to this engine before I completely give up on it but right now I'm not rushing into any decisions as this is just a hobby truck, I don't need it as a daily. Besides I'm in AZ and it has no A/C... It was 110° y-day and I have no intentions of giving my self heat stroke *lol*

I applaud you on your approach & thoughtfulness. More people should use the K.I.S.S. principle, they would cause themselves less headaches in the long run.

Thank you, it isn't always possible... But I try to live that principle. Sometimes my impatients wins though... Just like every one. *grins*
