Clean up the motor and compartment
Guys sorry for this question i am having a blank in my memory. I put on the Edelbrock 650 cfm thunder carb a while back and the halve covers came with a hose that conects to the front of the carb. like a pvc valve. What is the purpose and do i need to keep it? the valve covers are just cheapo pep boys ones if i remember right. Thanks.
I really need to clean the engine compartment up a bit so it looks less cluttered. any suggestion for all the wires on the intake? and others? Also i am gonna order a braided ss Fuel line kit from pump to carb from sumit and a diffrent filter.

My thought is yes, I would keep the hose from the valve cover to the carb base. That is your PCV valve pathway to keep your crankcase fro becoming overpressurized. The design is that you have a vent path from the opposite valve cover (whether or not it connects to the air cleaner) to pull fresh air into the crankcase. This allows for sweeping gases out of the crankcase to the intake of the engine to be burned away. If you do not run a PCV setup, then you will have high pressure in the crankcase, which promotes oil leakage at gaskets and other connections. I run a line from my passenger side valve cover to the bottom of my open air cleaner and then a line from the PCV valve on the driver's side valve cover to my carb base. I do not have any leakage so far.
If you want to clean up the top side of the motor, then move everything else that is on top of it to a corner in the engine comartment and run a vacuum source from the back of the intake to that point. That way there is very little on top of the motor and it doesn't look cluttered. Get those spark plug wires in wire looms down the side of the valve cover (just above the exhaust manifolds and seperate them so that they are neater and that will clean up the top a lot. |

It was summit branded, so it was pretty inexpensive as far as those things go. Back on topic, I would keep the vent hoses from the valve cover for the reasons mentioned. I put this motor in my 84 GMC with the Thunder AVS carb and a solid fuel line from Edelbrock. I have the Edelbrock fuel pump on the side of the motor feeding up to the billet fuel filter that is on the Edelbrock solid feed line. The fuel line is summit's braided line with AN fittings on it for finish. I decided a while back that I was done with fuel line hose clamps. From now on I will use finished fittings.

Thanks for al the pointer guys. The cap on the passengers side with thte hose goes to the front of the carb but were it meeds the gromet on the valve cover it leaks alittle oil. on the drivers side i have a filter going in the valve cover. you can see it in this pic. Also Cliffsta the kit is avalible through summit carries ther own brand and also sells edlebrock version. the summit one is on page 27 of ther catilog. It is called fule pump to carb hose kit. It comes with braided line and AN fittings. part # SUM 631522 or SUM 63150.

Looks better already. Did they have a braided line for the PVC hose? That would look good.

I don't know if he has a PCV valve inside it, I kind of doubt it. My thought would be that he needs to throttle down on his vacuum line to the carb a little by installing a PCV valve, not using a straight cap. The motor that I have above has caps on the valve covers, but they are billet and there is a PCV valve inside the one cap connected to the carb base. yeah it does not have a pvc inside it. It preforms fine though. Also Clifsta : earls makes a kit too for the fule line. Peice parts: what would be the advantacge to having a pvc on this motor? Thanks alot

better crankcase ventilation, i was gonna say if that thing was what you used as a pcv you want to throw it away, a stock one is better, but since it isn't you can keep it

OK, I stand corrected. I did not see the PVC. I thought the black hose was going back to the PCV. Anyway, the other hose would look good also in the braded from Summit.

Well Thanks peice parts for giving the explination and maybe i can take some pics of the inside of that thing tomarrow and the new filter on the other side. Those pics are old. Anyways the truck runs very smooth. idle is perfect and dang the thing will roast the tires!! well one tire.... It really has no cam in it. If i can figue how to make a small vidoe i will some time so you can hear it. But my uncal told me you don't really want a camm in this motor.
As for the fuel line it is more for saftey. I gotta replace the glass style filter and thought i might as well do thebillet aluminum flow through from sumit or earls.
