Scary Bed Floor

So I had my tire off my truck today and thought I would take some pictures of the bed floor of my truck. These are the supports on the underside of the bed floor.

Nope no holes, but that little section is the only part of the tank that has rust and it is only surface rust.

Yeah I have checked and so far everywhere I have seen it is solid. But when this bed is pulled I will look more into it.

Nope, it was made in Flint and has been in Indiana since. And what is weird about it is that the bed floor itself has very little rust at all and is only is surface rust.

Re: Scary Bed Floor

That's from people not washing the truck correctly. They hosed the paint down but did nothing underneath. It's too bad.

Either way it's the same end result and I need a new bed because of it.

Re: Scary Bed Floor

That's what happens iowa is the same damn way, not to jack your thread but does anyone know where (if) you can buy bed supports my frame and bed floor are in great shape but there are a couple of spots in the the supports where it's started to rust through and i don't see the point in replacing the whole floor since it's solid otherwise

Re: Scary Bed Floor

I live in the rust belt too. I've been thru what you are dealing with and I
suggest that when you replace your bed with another, you seam seal all the edges where your cross supports meet the bed floor. Also clean & coat the bottom side before you install. I use a product called "ZERORUST". It is available in several colors. I use red & black. First I paint with the black, then I switch to red. That way, I get full coverage. A couple coats is all you need. The good thing about RUSTFREE, is you can always touch up any problem area's later. Not so, with products like POR15.

I have a 78K20 that's been my plow rig for many years. I got tired of fuel tank's rotting out, so I switched over to polly tanks. You may consider doing the same.

Just sayin'.

Yeah I had plans on doing that when I get a new bed and cleaning up the frame too. Your in La Porte that's not too far from here. It's been a long time since I have been there. And everything will be considered when redoing my truck, don't want it to rust out in 10 years.

Unistrut, angle iron? Check your frame cross members.
I don't know if you can but bed supports (they sell everything else) but you can get creative.

Re: Scary Bed Floor

Also if you can't find a bed floor, you could build your own cross supports.

Yeah the thought has crossed my mind many times, but I would also like to have more solid bedsides so I think it would be easier/ more cost effective to find a good used bed.

Re: Scary Bed Floor

wow Those photos were scary, its too early in the morning for that.
just a quick thought on the support braces. I don't know if they will go right on with out any mods, but they don't look that much different from 67-72 bed supports.

I would heavily rust proof the new stuff to prevent it again.

You're supposed to wash trucks?

Whooda thunk it???

I keep a thin (sometimes thicker than others) film of road grime and dirt on mine to protect the paint. So far, so good
