The vent is stock; it just normally doesn't look that way. I'm sure it's to release air from the rotating gears cavitating and creating bubbles- but don't quote me.

Thats what it is for. Most newer vehicles just hang a piece of rubber hose attached up high instead of the old little metal check valve style.
