I just have to be the party pooper on this one.
maybe that is why the engine was just laying on the floor & no one wanted it.
OK, that being said, I have the highest hopes for ya. SOMETHING good has to happen sooner or later

The engien was being stored as a spare. I know the guy i bought it off of and trust him 100% He told me no knock no smoke...and that's what it was. I already racked up something like 70 or 80 miles on it yesterday, so this is a new problem, not something that was there when i bought it.

Don, would you bieleve me if i told you that I DID mention it?

LOL...well, 67-72king has a caddy in his longhorn, and he lost the oil pump goin down the road. He replaced the pump and all seemed good, but a couple days later it started knocking again.
Maybe it is just a longhorn thing.

Andy, I have lost oil pressure and not had any problems with the motor. It sounds like you got it shut down soon enough. As long as the loss of pressure was not due to excessive bearing clearance you should be fine. I am sure you would have heard plenty of knocking it is was. You should pull the dizzy and try to pressurize it with the dizzy oil pump drive. Then you will know if the bearings are too worn to hold pressure.

Good luck with it Andy. Just swap in the oil pump and fire it up it will either be a runner or you will know other wise pretty quick. I smoked a 305 one time and it ran O.K for a while but burned alot of oil. The bores got glazed from the heat. You will know it if it overheated real bad when you tear down the motor you will see alot of bluing on cylinder walls and bearings.

Andy,
Sorry to hear about this.
Make sure you get the correct pump to block gasket. Anything a little thinner or thicker will affect the oil pressure. The gasket that is made for is is all that will work correctly.
Here's a thread about the gasket...

Sorry about your crappy run, hey maybe this is just the excuse you need to order that 502 crate motor! I get those summit catalogs and see those $7495 complete 502's they run in there and just sit on the throne drooling over how good that'd sound in my truck. Then I remember that other than a little oil leak, my 402 runs like a freaking top and sounds damn good too.

Your comment about 4Krpm just reminds me how different one truck can be from the next, mine with the 4 speed 700r4 and 3.08 gears won't never see 4K rpm on the interstate, at least, not in 4th gear (YOWZA) according to one of those calculators, 700r4 + 26.6 inch tire + 3.08 gears + .04 slip (??) = 141 mph, no way, in hell, is that happening, ever, heck even in 3rd that chart shows 99mph at 4000 rpm (ok that might happen but not very damn often!).

I'll add one. Maybe I'm the one here but isn't that a lot of constant RPMS on a heavy reciprocating mass? If it were mine and my only mode of transportation, plus fresh off several years of sitting, I'd had babied it some.

I wish you only the best and hope its nothing major, but for God's sake man, treat her like the old lady she is.

Man, that sucks! I remember buzzin' down the freeway When my old 402 decided it was time to retire. By the time I saw the smoke, it was too late, but it wasn't an oil pump. Good luck!

In all reality, i wouldn't know what to look for on the bearing anyways...onless it is painfully obviouse.
Since the oil pump is external, I'm just going to remove, rebuild, and install it and see if the engine made it through OK.
i wouldn't have time to pull the engine untill next sautrday anywasy.
Andy,
A bad bearing does stand out like a sore thumb !! It will either be worn/burned through to showing Copper, or just be Flattened and possibly Spun. If it's spun the bottom half and the upper half will be overlapping instead of Butting up to each other.. I've pulled them to where the bearing is actually over lapping the side of the rod cap.. ( Not a good thing) That was an engine I was pulling 9 Grand out of, and the oil pump shaft busted

After reading this thread I'm glad the 425 with 400 tranny I bought is still resting in the 79 fleetwood out back! I started to put it in my GMC but when I got the 425 fired up it didn't sound too healthy so I went with a 350 4 bolt chevy. If you need any parts (hopefully not) give me a holler.

update...I got 40PSI when i fired it up today. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s....php3?t=144838

Lets see....questions and comments here...
Lux..thanks, i knew that at one timne, but had completely slipped my mind. Now, if I were to mill my oil pump body...that would increase my oil pressure...would there be any reason NOT to do this?

CPNE, you make a good point, however, I had just spun her up to 4000...I hadn't been holding it. I was trying to get in front of an old POS station wagon that was spewing oil and smoke from it's tail pipe. Kinda ironic in hindesight huh? And it wasn't my only mode of transportation...I'm hoildin onto the town car for this exact reason. Once the truck proves reliable, then I'll get rid of it. From what I understand, 4 k isn't all that hard on it...but 5k is askin for trouble. While yes, it was dormant for a long time...I have run it about 5 hrs all together over the last couple months, bringing it up to full operating temp, gone through about 5 or 6 oil chainges to flush out some contaminants (like fuel in the oil with the electric pump blowin it by the needles on the edelbrock) Then, on Sunday i drove her all over town all day. A couple short sprints on the freeway, but mostly just bumpin around on the surface streets. I looked at the odometer before leavin the shop today, and I drove it about 70 or so miles on sunday.
So even though it had been dormant, I had run it a bit and it should've been good to go.

does it still run smooth? I have heard of engines sitting for a while wiping out the lobes after being brought back to life. one guy at work found this out the hard way with his HIGH dollar BB (over $8000)

I've heard that the gasket thickness MUST be between .005 and .007.....no more, no less. I would assume that if there isn't enough distance, the gears will rub the block surface......no oil pressure. Too much distance and the oil goes around the gears instead of being forced through the oiling system......no oil pressure.
It'd be best to leave it as is. I know guys that are running really stout 500+ inch Caddys with stock oil pumps. I don't really see any reason to try to get more on a stock engine.

oil pump

Here Is a picture I found of an exploded view of an oil pump. I see yours is external. I'm not too familiar with caddys but this pic shows the pump IPB and the relief valve that you've been discussing . This is an AMC unit BTW.
VetteVet--hope shes ok
