I am wanting to do the same thing in swapping out my beat up '69 for a 72 with a billet grille, Can someone tell me why you need the center support latch off of 71-72? Whats the difference from my 69?

You can put the billet grill in the 69-70 grille surround if you are brave enough to take a cutout wheel to your grill and remove the center bar. Someone on the board did this (Not me) but it would be hard to find the post as it was months ago that I saw it posted...

Earlier in my life, I worked as an A&P doing sheetmetal repair work on corporate jets. My boss used to walk up and hand me a piece of aluminum sheetmetal and tell me it cost 10,000 dollars, make sure I drill the holes in the right place. I'd dick around all day fitting it up and getting my nerve up to drill the first hole. After a couple of years of that, a grille is nothing to be scared of.
