Running a Edelbrock #1406 600 cfm carb on my tired old 350 with stock intake and a adaptor plate for the carb. 10mpg mostly in the city stop and go traffic short trips. I have leaned this carb way out from the base setting and the engine runs great but the mpg did not go up that much. One thing about the Edelbrock carb is it is shure easy to adjust and the jets and needles are cheap. I would like to replace the intake with a proper matching intake and recheck my mileage.

Edelbrock 1406. Simple to work on. I tried to lean it out some but gas mileage did not go up and performance went down. Getting 12-13mpg in town with 3.73 gears. Gear vendors doesn't help in town but really helps on the interstate. Havent checked the mileage but used to use 1/2 tank to get to hunt camp and now use 1/4.

A HOLLEY 600 with a 383 425hp(dynoed) sbc, 700r4 & 3:73 out back. don't know the mi. - haven't driven ... yet!!

68stepbed, I just had a new 355 engine built with a 700r4 and in the first tank of gas I got about 14.5 mpg. I have a 650 double pump holley. I was hoping to get at lease 16 or better. I think my problem is that the carb is to rich and that the 3.07 rear gears are to high. The engine is lugging when it goes in OD. I believe I need 3.42 gears.

I have found with the 84 I get better millage when in 3rd not 4th I have a cam that works up wards of 3000rpm and a 31" tire combined with 3:45's drag me down below 2000rpm causing the luggiing. Bad combo =bad millage.
Oh and it's a 1406 600cfm the elc choke F ing sucks up here in Canada. Get a manual choke if you live in a climate that has fluxuating temps. under 13 all the time. I have spent over $200 in gas in 5 days.

67 has a 650 speed demon 12mpg

In my 68 shortbed im runnin a 650 cfm edelbrock performer on my 355 and 3.42 gears with a TH-350 and 27" tires. I pull off 16 on the freeway and about 10 drivin around town.

You got 14.5 with a DP?!? I'm impressed! If you tried a Vacuum Sec. carb, you would probably get better mileage. What size cam are you using? What kind of heads are you running? Try driving around town in third and see if it makes a difference. With a high gear like that, I would only use OD on the interstate.

Are you sure it's a DP ? not a dual line feed ? Lot's of guys get that messed up.

72mario, It's a dp all right. The cam is a edelbrock part #2102 with a edelbrock intake part #2601, don't know the spec on these with flat top pistons. The heads are 882 steel heads from chevy.

Barry Grant 750 Mighty Demon, Current average on new motor is 10-12MPG. Dynoed at 400RWHP & 425RWTQ, Distributor was acting up as well as some issues with the carb (running pig rich at Idle). I have sinced picked up the Inovative LM-1 setup so I can fine tune the carb much better. Ignition has been replaced from an HEI setup to a full MSD 85551 Dizzy, MSD 6AL Ignition box & Mallaroy Pro Master -E series 51000Volt Coil.

Edelbrock 1405 manual choke on rebuilt 355, stock intake, lightly ported heads, small cam of unknown duration (guy before PO did it), m22 tranny, 3.42 rear with 29" tires and I get around 13mpg if I keep the secondaries closed, 11mpg if I have some fun

. All I know is that single 16gal tank is too damn small.

Buckman, This may sound crazy, but I would run a 570 Strret Avenger. That cam, intake, and head pattern doesn't need alot of air. I think you would be very satisfied with the 570 SA. You would probably just have to jet it up a little.

I would also run a lower gear. 3.42 or 3.73 would be best.
