Ignition kill switch?

I know how to do it on an EFI car, but what about a carbbed truck? With a mechanical fuel pump, I cant do a fuel cutoff switch, but I need some way to cut power so the truck won't start.

Anyone have any ideas how this could be done?

Re: Ignition kill switch?

Since you can't do the fuel pump then go for the coil. If the coil has no power the truck caint start.

Re: Ignition kill switch?

So what would I do just wire an inline switch into the main coil wire? I'm still fairly new to small block chevys, since I come from a long line of nissans. Would I have to use a solenoid for the switch?

Re: Ignition kill switch?

See here's my problem. I'm just finishing up my crate motor install. Ive also got alot more money invested into the tranny and drivetrain of this truck. But the problem is my ignition lock cylinder doesn't work, so the truck can be started without a key. I need a switch that's small and easily hidden so I can kill the power. If I could afford that switch, I would just go ahead and buy a new lock cylinder, but being a broke 20 year old with too many bills to pay and in debt for the new engine, I just can't spend that kinda money. I rreally wish I could though.

Re: Ignition kill switch?

Put a hidden toggle switch on your neutral safety switch. The truck won't turn over at all unless the switch is on...

So you're saying that when the truck is in drive, the NSS is "off" and when in park, it's "on"?

If that's the case, I could wire it up so that the switch is "off" when Im not around, and i have to turn it "on" to start the truck.

Did I follow you correctly?

Re: Ignition kill switch?

That is correct. The NSS is open unless the truck is in park (or neutral) and won't allow power to the "start" circuit.

Re: Ignition kill switch?

Mine is only open in park, not neutral. Weird...

Where would I find the main power wire for the NSS? Would it be behind the column?

Re: Ignition kill switch?

i had a toggle switch mounted in the ashtray (so it was hidden) on the 78 bonanza project it would cut the power to the coil and wouldnt let it start...

Re: Ignition kill switch?

The kill switch to the coil will let the engine turn over but not start, the switch to the NSS wont let it do anything. I had one to the coil on my 82.. You could even do both for the extra security..

But how do I wire it up to the ignition? Do I just wire it to the main coil wire? If I do that, won't I need a solenoid since that's a pretty heavy duty wire?

Re: Ignition kill switch?

Look under the dash (right at the column where the ignition switch is) at a heavy PURPLE wire, that is the power wire that you would cut. It is used for the alarm systems as a disable to the starter. OR---go to the NSS switch and just cut the one to coming from the switch and put a toggle switch in it's line circuit. A lot of pickups in the 80's era had a wire that went to the clutch pedal (if installed), if there was no pedal, then the wires wire connected in a splice. "Use that wire for your break in the line"
