did 86 trucks come with true duals or a y pip set up

Did 1986 chevy trucks come with a true dual exhause with 2 cats. Or a single y pipe set up. The guy i bought the truck from just has separate pipes from each manifold going to two cheap mufflers.

1/2 or 3/4 with light duty emissions, v8 gas engine - Single exhaust with two pipes from muffler back both exiting driver's side (not passenger).

3/4 or 1 ton with heavy duty emissions (no cats) duals with exits on both sides.

Diesels - duals exiting each side.

Re: did 86 trucks come with true duals or a y pip set up

Gracho is right on ,Y-pipe to single exhaust, my 83 came that way and I would run the true dual exhaust like you described, had a friend of mine pull the exhaust pipe at the manifolds and run duals with 40 series Flows, when it came time to smog I would throw the original exhaust back up, the older I got the more of a hassle it became so now i'm running a single 3" exhaust with a 3" cat and 3'' in and dual 2.5 out Flowmaster dumped in front of the axel

2WD, or 4WD....?

My 86 4X4 came with 350 HD emissions, had a y-pipe with 1 cat, and single outlet on drivers side, behind rear wheel

Re: did 86 trucks come with true duals or a y pip set up

My truck 84 GMC Sierra Classic and the son's 86 Silverado came with a "Y" pipe and a single catalytic convertor under the passenger side. This went to a single muffler and then out the passenger side at the rear fender. That did not last long in my world. There are headers, a connection underneath to a "H" pipe and then to dual Flowmaster mufflers and out the back through "MEGS" stainless tips. We don't have smoggies here.

The upgrade would be to use a "X" crossover pipe, rather than the "H" design, but I will wait for old age to take out the pipe first.

I don't think any of our trucks that came with a cat had the cat on the passenger side. I know my 85 came with a y-pipe and the cat was on the drivers side.

I can't vouch for the later trucks but that makes sense. The frame has a "flare" in it to accomodate the cat on the drivers side. I don't think they ever changed that.

Lightbulb Re: did 86 trucks come with true duals or a y pip set up

I bought an '85 new and it was set up as a Y pipe into a single cat and then into a muff and dual out and exit the driver side.

I also bought my '87 new and it was exactlly the same set up as the '85.

So i don't think Chevy would of changed the entire exhaust system for one year and put it on the other side or as dual set up.

My son's truck and mine both were on the passenger side. I know this very well, since I had to remove all of the damnable metal shielding along with the cat in my changes to the trucks.

True duals is the only way to roll. Got no smog testing up here so nothing to worry about.

Re: did 86 trucks come with true duals or a y pip set up

Everyone I have seen that was stock. Has the manifolds, y pipe, then catalytic convertor on the driverside, intermediate pipe, over the axle pipe and then muffler with dual tail pipes on the driverside.

I did seen a hd 3/4 ton. It has stainless steel manifold but more like shorty headers, dual pipes down each side, not catalytic convertors, two mufflers, tail pipes 90ed behind the tires.

Re: did 86 trucks come with true duals or a y pip set up

On my 85 it was Y pipe, then ran dowm the drivers side into a cat and then a muffler and then exit in two pipes coming out be hind the drivers side rear tire. That was stock.
on my 84 the y pipe and pipe ran down the passangerside into a cat then a muffler.
