700R4 and a NP205 in a 78 K10

I looked at 78 K10 with a slipping tranny and a bad transfer case this week. Near as I can tell from looking stuff up it's got a TH350 and a NP203 (Full Time, Chain Driven) in it.

If I bought it I'd like a 700R4 and a NP205 (Part Time, Gear Driven) in it.

Whats it take to swap them in? Just repositioning the mounts and drilling new holes? Do the drive shafts bolt up? or would I need the drive shafts for a NP 205? and do those bolt up to the axles? 78 is going to be 12 bolt rear for sure.

Can I or should I use the later auto hubs if I go to an NP205?

Yeah, for the most part a couple days a weeks, and more on road then off.
Kind of the reason why I'd prefer the part time 4WD.

Certainly won't be used for rock crawling, all we have here in Florida is Mud and Sand.

did some googling, looks like to mate a 700R4 to a NP205 I need to swap the output shaft and tranny to transfer case adapter for a TH350/NP205 setup.

Advance adapters sells adpaters too.

That'll just leave the differences in drive shafts.

Do you really need the NP205? Why not go with an NP208, its a lot cheaper, and should be plenty strong for what you want to do. Half the trucks in the mid 80s got 700r4/NP208 combos, so they are pretty common

True, mostly like the 205 because of the gear drive. Chains stretch over time.

I edited my post above with some info I found. It's not a bad swap looks like. The 208 might not be a bad idea, still chain drive but, lighter than the 203 and 205 and would bolt right up to a 700R4.
