corp 14 vs D70 vs D70HD DRW?
does anybody know what RPO options had to be selected to get the different axles? I keep reading that dually's have regular corp 14 bolts, but my truck has a D70. Is the D70 specific to the camper special package?
and how can one tell the D70 and D70HD apart? I think mine's a 70 HD but the tag says rear axle rating: 7500, which is the rating for a 70. Last edited by magnethead; 02-21-2007 at 08:43 PM. |

it looks to me like the D70 is a 3.562" axle tube and HD has a 4" tube....my truck has 4"ers.

I didn't know the camper special came with a d70, I thought just the cab and chassis came with the d70. Wasn't the reason for the difference the axle width? The d70 setup is 5-6 inches narrower, right?

If you pull some info off the axle, it will tell you all you need to know about it. Spicer has a good site with docs on identifying your axle. As for the RPO codes this site may help.

I think the HD D70 has a larger ring gear of 11.5 instead of the 10.5

http://www.chuckschevytruckpages.com/14bolt.html this is the direct link fron chucks pages
HERE IS A CLOSE-UP OF A 14 BOLT GM REAR END. IT IS IN A 1977 CHEVY K/20. IT IS A FULL FLOATING AXLE, WITH THE MASSIVE 10 1/2" RING GEAR. THE AXLE SHAFTS ARE HELD IN WITH BOLTS. THE SMALLER 14 BOLT, WITH IT'S 9 1/2" RING GEAR, IS A SEMI-FLOATING DESIGN. IT USES C-CLIPS TO HOLD THE AXLES HAFTS IN. JUST LIKE THE 10 BOLT, AND 12 BOLT GM REARS. THIS MEANS IF YOU SNAP AN AXLE SHAFT, YOU COULD LOSE A REAR WHEEL, IF YOU WERE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE THAT WAY. SNAP AN AXLE WITH THE FULL FLOATING DESIGN, AND IT STAYS ON THE VEHICLE.

Re: corp 14 vs D70 vs D70HD DRW?
i dunno maibe its possible to see it at the type of hubs/drumbrakes that are on the axle the semifloating desighn as far as i know have the drum over the end ov the axle the full floater will have the axle in front of the drum and you can take it out without removing the weel (s)
i still have to delve deeper intoo that foir my own truck i want to rebuild it intoo a narrow track dually (wheels inboard of the fleetside bed )
