The color of the flames is called Magen To Go, I believe that is how you spell it. It is made by PPG. Here are a few pictures of my dad's old 57 with the same type flames.

I would guess just wet sand it away, I have a friend of mine doing it and he has been doing it longer than I have been alive, so I trust him. HEHEHEHE
