I checked with a local distributor and they told me that the fuel sender is 240-33 ohms...does this sound correct?

That could be right...If your using the original tank. I'd call Brothers www.brotherstrucks.com and tell them what you have. I believe the 55-59 trucks all had 0-30 ohm original senders but I could be wrong!

If you can get to the sender float you can take an ohm meter to it and test the ohms then you will know for sure. Ed ke6bnl
