Re: Shoulda listened to Dad....again.
Only an 85mph speedometer, eh? Kinda makes me happy my '79 goes to 100 or 110 (don't remember now, too cold to go out), just had it at 95 for a few miles tonight before snow hits (which is really like 105, cause of my huge rear tires), loved it!
now about that valve hitting thing, I'm thinking when yer cam split in two the rea half fell behind so some of the valves were open when they should be closed, so piston hit them - still a valvetrain issue tho, not bottom-end related. Just replace the short block, complete 350s can be had for under $500 all day long, just find one in good condition and swap whatever performance parts you can over to it and drop it in. Also, what are those roller-tip rockers from?

#7 piston actually hit the head, there is a combustion chamber shaped dent in the top of the piston, so something had to come loose down there. I found a place about 1 1/2 hours from here that'll sell me a complete Vortec 350 with tranny for, hopefully, around $300 so I think I'm gonna go that route. Those Roller Tipped Rockers are Comp Magnum Roller Tips, they were bought for that engine due to the lift of the cam I was running, thought it better safe than sorry since I was dealing with over .500" lift on a flat tappet cam. They're for sale now, since I won't be using them in anything else for a while.

Re: Shoulda listened to Dad....again.
So as I get deeper and deeper into this, the more I find wrong. It's really starting to get disheartening now. The whole thing is scrapped and a whole lot of money wasted, now comes the decision on what should go back in it. I'm bouncing back and forth between a 489 BBC and a 5.3L Vortec...this is really disappointing to me...

Re: Shoulda listened to Dad....again.
Well, I guess I'm due for an update. I got the tranny out, flexplate off, back part of the cam out. It's been nothing but worse news every time...pics tell the story....

Re: Shoulda listened to Dad....again.
I also found out yesterday that #8 cylinder broke a rod, no holes in the block I can see so far, but the piston slides down the bore as easy as can be. I don't have the oil pan off yet to see what happened, but as soon as I do, I'll update with more pics.

Re: Shoulda listened to Dad....again.
You are pretty lucky my friend. It could have come through the bell housing and the firewall. My uncle had a friend who back in the 60s had a cam go through his knee when he was drag racing a Corvette. He dropped the clutch at like 5 grand I guess. My dad saw the aftermath in the car. Shattered his knee completely.
