Having Swap Thoughts

With my`72 K2500-350/TH350.I`d like to swap the 4L80E into it from my diesel `91 3/4t 4wd Suburban.How would you do it?Use NP241 from Suburban?Adapt to the NP205?
The other thing is use all 4 leaf packs from the Suburban. They`re 4" lift EZ-Rides.What`s the best way to make these longer springs to work?

Re: Having Swap Thoughts

Tim,Me and a freind of mine bought a 84 3/4 ton 4x4 a couple months ago that has a 4L80E in it with a 208 transfer case it's a neat deal but I've heard that they don't work well without the computer this truck has the factory computer with the tbi and shortly after we got it started running rich and rough now were kinda screwed because any tech wants/needs the vin to pull the code to find out whats the problem. There is one for sale on the parts board that will work without the computer so I'm sure there is a way to make it work without the computer. This is just a little info from a 4L80E aggrevated owner

Re: Having Swap Thoughts

That`s the thing. This was in a 6.2 diesel Suburban which has a mechanical fuel pump...nothing computer controlled on the motor. The ECM is a stand-alone just for the trans.I guess I`d have to come up with a speedometer of some sort.

The other option is leave the GMC original and revive the Suburban. It`s body needs work (dents and rust starting)and it needs motor work. For pretty cheap I could buy a Suburban with a decent body and motor to set on my frame and suspension, which is where my money is with this Suburban.I even have the original 6.5TD from my`92 K3500 that I could drop in w/o the turbo. That motor just needed an injector pump and the same pump sits on the 6.2 in the Suburban. This thing got 20mpg all day long with better trip mileage.I`d skip the turbo just to keep it simple.I have a custom dual 3" exhaust already and the a/c box won`t clear the turbo. The a/c is staying and it`s already updated to R134.
If I revive the Suburban then I think I`d part`n`sell my`92 K3500,let the Suburban replace it for work.I worked out of the `Burb for a while and only need a ladder rack to be good to go.The`92,I`d take the 6.5TD/NV4500 out and sell it for an excellent builder:
*`92 K3500 SRW regular cab
*Loaded SLE in Woodland Green (fleet color) w/bucket seat interior
*GVW above lift laws...perfect straight axle condidate
*Diesel VIN...no emissions testing, run what you want.

Just run a GPS on the dash... you know you need it anyway!

Re: Having Swap Thoughts

Yeah, the ECM from a`91 diesel Suburban. The only year they put o/d in that body.
On the speedo,I would have no problem staying with the NP205.But,If I use the NP241 won`t I need to convert from electronic? The transmission has two speed sensors and don`t they need to be functioning for the transmission to work properly?I know with one or both bad the trans goes into fail-safe.The scanner said I was getting varied speed readings and replacing the sensors fixed it.

I have an NP241 here that has a mechanical speedo. From a 91 K5. You can also adapt a 205. I plan to use a 4L80 in front of the 203/205 doubler I am building.

The speed sensors are for torque converter lock up and shifting, if I remember correctly. They should be working. You could use an later sending unit to provide VSS. You could also override those functions with a manual shift body like that one in the for sale section. I sent a check on that, so I plan to hook it up electronically, with a computer to control the EFI, Turbo waste gates and transmission shifting, unless it's in manual mode.

As for the springs, you will need different brackets for the rear. Are they 56" or 63" springs? (Could be either). I typically use a shackle flip, but put the left side bracket on the right and right side on the left. Get pretty good shackle angle out of it.

Heh, how many trucks do you want to work on at once? 5 is about my limit

The fronts should bolt in without much fuss.

Re: Having Swap Thoughts

I have a '72 K2500 that has had a 454 swapped in it...T350, and I guess the stock NP205...I want to swap in a 4L80e...I'm new to the 4x4 world...any ideas what mods I will have to make...will the NP205 bolt to the 4L80e? Need an adapter? mods to driveshafts? I plan on running a controller for the trans.
Thanks for any and all suggestions. SC

unless you're hell bent on the 205 I'd stay with a 241 or 208. They are usually plenty strong, have better gear ratio's, and are shift on the fly. Just make sure they are well protected as cast aluminum doesn't like rocks.

The 205's advantages mostly come with more extreme 4x4 related stuff. They hold up behind more gear reduction, i.e. behind a 203 or 241 in a doubler. Also, the shift rails can be separated so you can do front digs or 2 wheel low. They also have a PTO spot.
