Oh crap, i need ideas

I was under the impression it was while taking out the water pump the bolt snapped. If that was the case, the easy out has worked everytime for me. (Ok, I'm 2 for 2)

My wife has said this to me a few

"if it aint going in, quit turning to the right"

That's usually when I am trying to put the gallon of milk in the frig.

Decide what you're going to do and get everything ready.

If you go the vise grips route, get the vise adjusted to fit the bolt.
Heat the bolt with a propane torch and after it's hot put some was on the bolt. Bee's wax is preferable, but ol' fashioned paraffin (candle wax) works fine. The heat will suck the wax in and lubricate the threads. Start removing the bolt immediately.
If you weld the nut on, do the same thing with the candle wax.

On the plus side, if you want to call it that, at least you have a little to work with because the bolt's not snapped off flush with the block.

This is exactly what I do - it's worked every time.

I had bad luck with welding a nut. But i'm just using a flux core wire welder.

I had 3 exaust bolts break off in the head and tried the welding a nut on and the heat/wax at the same time. Put the nut on, welded it to get it super hot, then hit it with wax. Even tried welding the vise grips to the bolt.

The 70's steel bolt wouldn't take the weld, it broke off first through 5th turn, and the wax caught on fire when it dripped off and hit the power stearing soaked motor mount.

I wound up drilling and tapping the old bolt for a slightly smaller hole.

I also had about 1/2 inch clearence to play with. Vice grips and pipe wrenches didn't help a bit. I tried left handed bits and an extractor set. Drilling and tapping was my only option.

lesson learned, tap everything on these 30 year old trucks before you reinstall anything.... like i'm going to buy EVERY bolt that doesn't go in smooth.
