How much lower than ZERO do you need to go

Kevin, a quick question if you don't mind the hijack: My Dad may be getting a cherry 72 4x4 Blazer. If he does, we have talked about going 4x2 with it, and putting on my extra 68 front clip. Am I correct to understand that a 2wd front crossmember will bolt up to the frame with little/no mods, and to use the trailing arms in the back I would need to build brackets for the outside of the frame for the coil springs to mount to? Any other info on converting one of these would be much appreciated!
Yes that is all about true. The front will have a few bolt holes that will line up and the rest you must drill. As Fry hinted too the 4x4 frame has a higher frame were the front cross member bolts in so you get an extra 1" or so lower with stock parts. Then once you drill and bolt in the rear trailing arm cross member you will need to weld on spring pads if you use the 4x4 rear end and yes some form of spring or bag mounts.

How low do you want to go with one? If you want it down with the rest of the cool kids Dad's rigs you might as well just get a PorterBuilt DropMember for the front and a 4link set up for the rear and be done!

How about ZERO with no drop spindles, or with bigger wheels, or with less negative camber

OK so were should I start!
Why would you want to keep stock 30+ yr old spindles on what will end up being a very expensive rig when you can get the latest in metal process and design with new drop spindles.

Just how big of a tire do you want because the last time I checked fender blisters were not meant to conceal your tire popping through the top of your hood!

Negative camber, that is so before the modern world of the DropMember! Do you kids make you drop them off a block away from school so their friends don't see you

J/K almost

Re: LFD's some day 2wd Blazer Build

Just pointing out that there are attributes that make the 4x4 frame desirable for dropping. It may be more suitable for those who do not want/afford to use a dropmember (who wouldn't want one...). You have a 2wd that's getting a DM and I won't argue that it's a great plan. Would I put a 2wd on a DM with a big 'ol step notch if I already had one available?: In a heartbeat. Hell, I'd probably cut the floor out and sink the tub down over a full C5 roller

As far as the kids; you'll have to ask them what they think of their Dad's rigs

Re: LFD's some day 2wd Blazer Build

I say start with a couple of dropmembers front and back and build your own frame like josh did with his truck. I am sure that what ever you do will be approved of and as far as cutting up 2wd blazers...................who cares its only metal as someone once said.

Great discussion guys, thanks!

He wound up getting the Blazer dirt cheap, just as well been free. Needs more work than he thought. It has truck doors that have been cut, no rear hatch, and it needs some serious glass work on the top. But the tub is cherry.

Re: LFD's some day 2wd Blazer Build

Oops. Forgot I made another thread in this forum. It's only my third time in here!

http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=309754

Turns out not to be the sweet deal he thought it was, but he ended up getting it for an equivalent of $500. Dad is doing some excavating for this guy, and is taking $500 off his bill for the Blazer. He wants to make a 2wd out of it, and put the extra 68 front clip on it that we have.

Does anyone make an aftermarket top for these, or do we need to find someone good with glass?

Sorry for the hijack Kevin!!

No problem I just felt I missed something and wanted to know if it was just me (Mike no need for a comment) thats all.

I don't know of an after market top unless you go with a soft top. I am thinking about building my own out of Alum once I get my wheel and bead roller set up. Fiber glass is not very hard to work with if you find an OK top to start with.
