Re: Driveshaft 1 pc or 2 pc?

For those who have swapped to a one piece, for a V8, three speed stick, what trucks/cars have a driveshaft of the correct length to use?

Thanks
-Brian

Re: Driveshaft 1 pc or 2 pc?

bowtie
get a shaft with the correct ujoints that is too long have a driveshaft shop shorten and balance.
shortstep
what series are the 2 ujoints you need to make into one 1310 1330 1350 3r?

everybody else, the stock style carrier bearing is a good bearing, and with a little welding the stock bracket works great.
at least 3x a week i have to fix a driveshaft that a PROFESSIONAL MECHANIC screwed up...

remember your ujoints (on these trucks, and most anything else) will be in time, mark the shaft before you take it out, mark all of the parts before you dissasemble driveshaft (you can put these back together 180 out of time, but then your original weights are on the heavy side and not the light side!)
DON'Tput your driveshaft in a vice then hit it with a hammer!!! it makes flat spots in the tube and bends the tube. set ujoint above jarge socket or use a press.
DON'T use crappy ujoints (precision is the worst i can think of .030 loose is common) spicer or neapco are great.
all of these things can cause a driveshaft to become out of ballance and can ruin a good carier bearing fast, or trans bushing or pinion seal.
even if you do all of this correctly you may still need to have your drivshaft ballanced, even from the factory these shafts arrent exactly straight or well ballanced.

2 piece driveshafts must be ballanced as an assembily.
im done sorry for my rant, hopefully it saves someone some money and frustration.

Re: Driveshaft 1 pc or 2 pc?

Longhorn, I think you misunderstood my comment. I am all for the two piece design. The question I asked was assuming that GM knew something from their tests and trials and decided to go with a two piece design. It was probably a torque thing. I agree with you that they are probably stronger than the one piece.

I had a longbed a few years ago that I put a 700r4 in. It had a one piece driveshaft. Once I changed the transmission, the truck vibrated pretty bad from about 50 mph to about 70. Couldn't figure it out. I finally decided to change back to the two piece design and what do you know, the vibration disappered.

Re: Driveshaft 1 pc or 2 pc?

the reason for running a multiple piece driveshaft is for lenth, or to lower tunnel inside car.
lenth being the main reason, a long driveshaft needs to be large in diameter to be rigid enough to withstand the forces of spinning, if you were to build a 70'' driveshaft out of 2.5" tubing it would bend at high speeds (visualize a jumprope)
the only reason factory production cars have a driveshaft over 2.5" in diameter is lenth. the shafts we build for 500hp dirt track cars are 2.5" .085 dom tubing and i have never seen one fail by itself.

vibration will make the rubber part of a carrier bearing fail, lack of lubrication will make the bearing fail. doing burnouts only strains the ujoints.
