Please read---DUMB DUMB me
I will make this short as possible.I was installing my motor for the last time in my 69 step,I had 2 criss-crossed chains and grade 8 bolts with my 2 ton cherry picker> iwas lowering the motor and trans together and was very close to the mounts when I saw a wire in the way of the mount,SO not thinking I reached to grab the wire and SNAP one bolt snapped on the head and down came the motor on my middle fingers right hand,my fingers between the motor mount and frame mount, yes all the weight of both on these 2 fingers,as I screamed in the worst pain I ever experienced my wife came out and shoved a floor jack under the pan and raised it to where I got my severely smashed fingers out.A fast trip to ER (she drove) and I spent 2 hours there.Whatever they injected in the fingers gave relief in 30 seconds wow good stuff.A trip to a specialist yesterday said no surgery needed THANK YOU!!!! he said the fingers literally exploded and time will heal.6 weeks off work and possibly 1 year for total recovery.
SO BE SMARTER THAN I WAS.NEVER EVEN FOR 1 SECOND PUT YOUR HAND IN THIS POSITION.I am known for chewing guys out at work for not using jack stands ect. A close look now shows the grade 8 bolt sheared,it was tight to the block and just a defective bolt apparently. |

Yeeeouch!!! That hurt just reading about it! Too bad we sometimes have to injure ourselves in order to get smarter... but most of us have, myself included.
You're very lucky your wife was there, and knew what to do without panicking! Good luck getting her to believe that 'doctor's advice'!

Re: Please read---DUMB DUMB me
The description of the exploding finger is right on. I smashed one a few years ago. I described it as somebody steeping on a strawberry. It aint pretty and it will take time. Oddest thing for me was not having a fingernail.

Re: Please read---DUMB DUMB me
I also had a similar experience with a 454 th400 combo swing-in on a cherry picker with chains. I was pushing the picker in closer when somehow it flopped over when the bolt holding one of the chains busted. I was lucky but it scared the poop outta me and now I use a engine plate evrytime...

Re: Please read---DUMB DUMB me
I think I'd forgive her for a bent pan lol. My O.L.would have gone to pieces and would NEVER have figured out how to work a floor jack! Good thing you A) had your wife handy,B) she was handy.
In fact you MIGHT owe her big-time. At least a nice dinner.

Re: Please read---DUMB DUMB me
Ouch! Hope it does not affect your hobby too much this next year.
I was working on putting the new engine in, messing with headers, etc, took break to look at situation, standing in front of truck discussing next move (thank God) and "TINK" chain I was using on engine picker broke. 454 dropped into engine compartment 3-4 inches, right where my hands had been 30 secs earlier. I turned white and went inside for a couple of hours. Get well soon, its gotta suck
