Think of it this way - a stock 5.3L has more power than anything that could ever came factory in your truck - even the 454.

Even the 454 was only rated at 360ft lbs. I don't know what the 5.3L is stock but I'm sure you can get to 360...

The 454 in my old '79 was such a pig. I think that year was only 205? horsepower. The 242 inline 6 in my Jeep can beat that.

A 5.3 with no emissions and a tune will work great for cruisin and haulin light loads. They are awesome engines and you just cant beat them with a stick. I say go for it!

a carb 454 is rated at 230hp and 380 pound feet of torque and i think the tbi ones made 240hp.

Depends on the year, the EPA really killed the 454 in the late 70s.
