Re: new radio suggestions
I found an original radio on ebay for less than $20. I also bought a small motorcylce amp with volume control and ipod input. My plan is to take apart the original radio and save only the faceplate and knobs (all the stuff that's visible). I'll wire up a new volume control knob for the amp, and connect the shaft to the original knob. The other knob I'll wire to a push switch, to turn on and off the power to the amp. I'll also add a small LED light behind the faceplate to make it look realistic.
So, when I want tunes in my truck, I'll push in one knob to turn the "stereo" on, hit play on the ipod, and use the other knob to adjust the volume. I'm already doing this in my other car ('55 Chevy), and it works great! It looks completely original, sounds good, and was super cheap. I think I spent less than $50 on the whole thing! If you can solder a few wires, this is a great way to go...

Re: new radio suggestions
I have the original radio in the stock location and put a new Alpine under the dash in one of those black boxes with an old rebuilt reverb unit under it that gives that crisp echo effect like in the 60s and 70s, all hooked up to an amp that I hid behind the glovebox and two 6x9s in their own boxes that I trimmed to fit right under the edge of the seat. Everything is out of the way and looks decent. Not out of place at all. I still need to install some 5" round 3-ways in some plastic kick-panels from The Truck Shop in Orange, CA. That will add to the echo effect from the reverb unit that I bought at the famous Pomona Antique Swapmeet. I actually scored all of these sound system parts there. I recomend hitting as many of your local swapmeet/car shows as possible. Good deals on hard-to-find parts. I'll get a bright picture of the stereo as soon as I can.

Re: new radio suggestions
Update: had the radio I scored from the junk yard converted to am/fm stereo. It also has mp3 jacks in the back. While installing it I realized that my dash was cut so I made a little trim piece to go around the face to cover up the hack job. It works well and sounds great. Thanks for all the input guys.

Re: new radio suggestions
I used a new pioneer radio with the remote controller.
Mounted the radio behind the dash (stock radio in place) and use the remote. Works great, sounds great and a great price Regards |
