Re: What did you pay for your dually ?

Will be a year in early February when I drove nearly 200 miles for this 85 C-30 with a '94' flatbed converted to a Knapheide dump bed. This was originally a wrecker until the body shop owner retired, sold the wrecker half and replaced it with the dump bed. My goal was to find a decent 1-ton dump bed for our rural needs. Overall this truck was what I was looking for as a strong foundation with the initial investment of $2700.00. It has taken work on minor things but that's what I enjoy about it...it's old enough even I can work on it!

Plan to continue to maintain it as a "keeper" with occasional "upgrades" knowing what a new one would cost. I figure I have a long way to go before I even make it half the value of a new one!

Pic of the day it came home:

And a pic from a couple of months ago in a "working mode"...

As the budget allows I'll just keep "updating" as I have, and like we all tend to do, but it will always be a 'working' truck...at least that's what I tell the wife. Yet no law saying it can't look as good as it runs.

Its the sikkens hot rod black semi gloss paint its suppost to be a 6/8.5 drop but its more like 7/10.5 drop the rear looks like it sits lower than the front but it doesn't. I've sectioned a front crossmember 1.5 inches but when i went to install, a entire can of worms opened up. if you look the rear axle sits in the middle of the frame rail. so a notch had to be made. it's sure a conversation piece

Care to share your 'can-o-worms' story?

I tried the x-member section on my 68 before swapping in a Dropmember. What I found was there was no way the post-73 x.member would go 1.5" w/o moving the steering too (steering linkage interfered w/the lower a-arm shaft u-bolt hardware & the x-member lip). The max I could get was 1.125" & still have a minimum .0625" clearance everywhere. I made shims to space it to the 1.125" dimension.

Re: What did you pay for your dually ?

it is leading to me making tubular a arms, rack and pinion, new steering shaft, now i'm thinkin that a 2 inch z'ed frame would be easier. If its z'ed ill need to shave the bottom of the frame 2 inches so i keep the same clearance, moving the exhaust is easy. then ill still need to borgeson the steering shaft, modify the motormounts ect ect its fun when im getting payed to do the work but its no fun when its for myself with no pay

The guy I got the truck off of told me the same thing GC said (Frito Truck wheels). The article about the truck in Street Truck said that the wheels came from American Force Wheels. The tires are the standard 225/60/19.5s (I feel like I'm screwing that up... Sorry, super hung over today, I'll fix later once I get my brain switched back on).

They are direct bolt ons without an adapter. Truck rides nice. Needs bumpstops as it gets frame on suspension with bigger bumps/potholes, but it's a work in progress.

Probably 225/75r19.5, comes out to about 31" tall.

Re: What did you pay for your dually ?

Wow some good deals on duallys on here. I traded a blown 468ci chevy motor (small weiand 177 blower) and an old set of 17" torqe thrust wheels with used tires for mine, but it was in very good condition for the age it was, new motor with only 5000 miles new rear end, new clutch, brakes front suspension ect. you get the picture. Here are some shots the day I drove it home.

My $3250 '88 R30 that I may or may not have paid too much for.

Fired right up this morning after sitting out in the snow and cold for several days. TBi may not really be all that for performance but it's nice in cold weather.

You have the exact same wheels as mine, I think that's the first set I've seen other than mine so far.

Re: What did you pay for your dually ?

I probably paid too much too, but didn't pay a lot, so I'm cool with it. I paid enough to buy it and that's all that matters I guess! I mean after looking at rust bucket '64 - '65 Suburbans in the $4,500 - $10k range for six months, $3,500 for a running, driving truck with no rust and new wheels and tires seemed just about free!

And every day when I look at my truck, it still makes me smile a big wide smile, so I can't complain!

Check out the California craigslists. Lots of decent trucks that are going for bargain pricing because they either won't pass smog or the CA reg is way past due and it's too expensive to register them compared to what the truck is worth. Seems like taking one out of state (assuming the laws in WA are reasonable on brinigng trucks in) might be a good deal.
