Tried to kill myself.
So... I had to get my transmission out, and I've never done this before. 1973 K20, basically stock height maybe plus an inch or two. Anyway I've pulled the engine before so I figured I'd just leave the transmission on and pull both out since I don't have a trans jack or a lift. Had all sorts of problems, finally got it moving and I couldn't get it high enough to clear the core support. Dropped it back down, and ran the arm out to the last setting which SAYS good for 1000lbs. Lifted it up, got it almost high enough and the damned thing spun sideways a little and got overbalanced and started to go ass-over-tea-kettle on me. Now of course, being a retard with no healthy regard for anything large and heavy that's swinging around in the air at face level, my friend gets under the damned thing and tries to catch it instead of just letting it go. I jumped on the side of the hoist and managed to get just enough weight to get it to settle back down. We were up on about 2 1/2 wheels there for a second. That'll get your heart pumping.... anyway, we got it back in line and managed to move it away and drop it back down to where it was manageable. I'm really glad it worked out like it did, but I definitely ripped my guy a new asshole for getting under 600lbs+ of steel. I would have been more than happy to watch it destroy my fender and shatter on the ground than crush a friend, no matter how little of a survival instinct he has. Anyway, just a heads up to anyone who hasn't done it, be very careful. Next time I'll let some air out of the tires so I don't have to lift as far, and maybe just pull them one at a time. Also the jack is getting stabilizers next time I have my welder handy.

Hey, I don't mind admitting my mistakes (to anyone but my wife), if it could save someone a lot of hurt or frustration later. And yes, it is my fault for buying the cheapo China-hoist in the first place.

Re: Tried to kill myself.
I remember a friend inviting me over to "help" him pull his motor in HS, he had a chain wrapped over a tree and a come along moving the engine and trans out, tree branch broke, landed on his car, totaling car, mom was screaming her head off, dad was p1ss3d because the tree scratched the newly painted barn. I never went back for anything automotive related, figured I learned my lesson on the first time. Redneck at its finest.

Re: Tried to kill myself.
Good to hear you made it through that alive! I know the way I had to yank my engine and trans wasn't the most graceful, but just remember that if you think it might be unstable. It most definitely is!

Re: Tried to kill myself.
Sounds like your friend tried to kill himself.
I always do the engine and trans separate unless I have the core support out. Which in some cases is worth the time if you don't have the proper tools to help remove the transmission. Even the extra time not killing yourself, and give you all the room in the world.

Glad you both are okay, it could have been a lot worst. Thanks for posting as we can all learn from situations like this.

Re: Tried to kill myself.
Glad nobody was hurt. But let me tell you something about your friend, you might already know. That guy is a good one to have around in a pinch. He might not always make the most intelligent decisions, but give me one friend who will react under pressure, and I'll give you five who won't.
Now I'm not advocating anyone dive under a SBC and trans to keep it from hitting the ground or truck. But the simple fact that he reacted, and didn't just turn and run, tells me a little about the fella.

Yeah, you got something there. Wouldn't pick anyone else to have around if things went wrong.

Re: Tried to kill myself.
That'll make you pinch a hole in your shorts, huh? I've had a few near-misses, it only takes once to really get your attention. I quit pulling engines and trannies together, too much opportunity for disaster.
Don't be too hard on your buddy, there's not a lot of time to think when everything starts tipping over... |

Re: Tried to kill myself.
gota watch those steel toes, we wouldn't let anybody wear them on the construction site (mason work, its ok for framers) because the boss figured it was better to crush a toe than get the toes stuck in the pinched metal.

Re: Tried to kill myself.
well here on a job site it would be shut down with out steel toes
no matter what the boss says It's the law I'd still prefer to drop a brick on my boots over runners and an engine lol
