Re: Camshafts..
I like to do Zero, TDC & your 1/2 turn...just run through the firing order(every 90 degrees on the crank, you have 1 TDC ,comp stroke). If you do this with the intake off, you will get an idea how far this sets the pungers into the lifters(.030-.050). Lube the lobes & lifter faces real good with some good old Moly paste, & I would use the GM EOS on the break in. Set your #1 tdc comp stroke, & drop the dist, but leave it slightly loose on the clamp. You want a quick fire up & ear adjust the timing. Pull her up to 2000 rpms ,as soon as you see the oil pressure come up & run that first 20-30 minutes @ that speed....maybe buzz the throttle a few times(200-300 more rpms) to redirect the oil splash /spray. Generally after that, I shut it down, change the oil filter, fire back up & set the timing with a lite. i will then take her out for a 40-50 mile run (easy....you have time to romp on her later)
I will change the oil & filter after that 50 mile ride.... and maybe give her a little "soup" , but not "nuts " with her yet....go put 200-300 miles on her, & change the oil again. Check for any silver in the oil....clean, drop the hammer & burn some rubber! 55 yrs young, but going in 18....crazyL
