Hole in burb deck for pick up/sender access?

I did some searching but didn't find what I need. I'm thinking about cutting an access hole in the rear floor of the '69 suburban for access to the fuel pick up tube/sending unit. Has anyone done this or have measurements to do it? Thanks for any assistance you can offer....

My original floor had that done.
I didn't take any measurements, since it was getting removed for a new floor.

I will look at my old pics to see if there is one of the floor, and perhaps you can get a rough idea as to where the hole should be cut.

Leon, sounds like a good idea to me, The General should have made an access cover from the factory back in the day. I had to drop the tank in a
'91 4x4 Burb I owned several years ago and thought about doing the same thing using a scarp piece of bed floor for a plate covered by the carpet. Never got to it and sold the Burb but I think it's a great idea for someone keeping a Suburban for any length of time especially with the newer in-tank fuel pumps and senders.

Well, it seems I never took a pick of the floor itself.
But I found one that I took just before the tear down.
You can barely see the spot where the access is, so I put a pointer to where it is.

Basically a hole saw was used, and a strip of sheet metal to hold the center section to the floor.

Probably not good enough for you, but I thought I would try any ways...

That's what I was thinking. If I do end up keeping this for a while I don't want to have to drain the tank and drop it when I have a problem with fuel supply or sending unit.

Thanks Chris. That at least gives me an idea where the unit location is. I will do a lot of measuring before I attempt cutting it.

I'm surprised that after all of these years access like this has never been addressed. I had to replace the fuel pump in my 1996 tahoe and wondered why no one has ever thought to put access to do this either. The tank was a PITA to remove.

I did this yesterday and took measurements and pictures. All I have left to do is make some trim for around the hole so I can set the cut out piece back in. I will try and get that done tomorrow and post it up in a new thread.

I need to drop my tank to address the sending unit and a leak I have when the tank is really full. I it was only the sending unit I wouldn't hesitate to cut a hole in the deck. I would probably just cut a piece of 16 ga. steel a couple inches larger and drill holes to screw it down to the wood deck.

My tank was pretty much full too. It was easy to siphon the gas out through the sender hole...

The 16 Ga metal would work just fine but I always like to do things the hard way...

My Burb has factory carpetting in the rear, so I figure the carpet can be rolled back once the plate was installed and nobody will ever see it.
