72 chevy k10 5.3 engine swap

Im doing a complete restoration on my 72 chevy k10 and i have decided to give it a modern touch in the engine compartment while still having the classic look. I am needing some advice on the best transmission and transfer case combinations with the 5.3L swap. Also some info on the engine crossmember and any other modifications. If this helps i have a 4 inch rough country lift that im going to start installing tomorrow. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

I used a 4l60e mated to the NP205 TC. I ordered the parts needed to mate th two together from advanced adapters.

Good luck with your build.

Re: 72 chevy k10 5.3 engine swap

As far as I know it will bolt up, you just have to install the correct flywheel to "reach" the torque convertor and I think the holes need to be enlarged to match the bolt pattern of the older convertors. I would do some research to be sure, but I think you can use the 5.3 or 6.0 flexplate with the correct spacer, I think the flywheels have a certain "dish" or offset to them depending on the application...

Re: 72 chevy k10 5.3 engine swap

If you're going the extra mile to swap a 5.3L, get the 4L60e that would have come behind that motor. It can all be controlled by the same computer. You can use the NP205 that should have come in your 72, but the input shaft may need to be swapped.

As far as adapting the 4l60e to a np205 is the input shaft the only part needed?

No you will need a adapter to change the rear of the transmission from 6 bolt to 4 bolt, it also adds the extra length needed. In addition you have to modify the transfer case mount and coupler.

You can go to my build for more detail. I think the transmission stuff starts at post #82

Re: 72 chevy k10 5.3 engine swap

Thanks crash. I checked out your post. Do you have any knowledge on adapting a 700r4 in this type of swap. I have one out of a 93 chevy and if this would work i would like to use it to keep from putting out more cash for another tranny.

The 700r4 will work. I believe you will still need to change the tail shaft and modify the trans to transfer case adapter and coupler.
