its got me intrigued now why i have both the clutch switch and the brake light switch!! i might do a bit of testing etc over the w/end to see exactly what function the clutch switch is providing. i can see that the one wire goes from the clutch switch to the brake light switch, and then from there to the cruise control module........................
I have schematics that show both switch are wired in parallel. If one switch fails the other switch will turn off the cruise when the brakes are applied.

Some manual shows both switchs on 2WD and others show the second switch only on the clutch.

Re: cruise control

ok,

just got my new turn signal/cruise control lever.

installed it, went for a drive to test, and no cruise control! dammit

unplugged connector on cruise control box under the hood

Quote:
Do a test to see if the circuits are working.

Unplug the wire connector from the cruise module on the cruise unit under the hood.
Check for power on the Pink wire with black stripe (with the key on) – there should be power. there is power
Check for power on the Gray wire (with the key on and cruise switch on) – there should be power. there is now power(before there wasnt)
Check for power on the Brown wire (not touching the brake pedal) – there should be NO power. there is no power
Check for power on the Brown wire (while the brake pedal is pushed) – there should be power. there is still no power
does this mean the brake light switch is dead or needs to be adjusted?

thx

Re: cruise control

The readings are better with the new cruise switch, but they show a brake switch porblem.

Multiple problems do not suprise me on this old of a truck.

Check the brown wire at the brake switch. Usually it is the big curved switch that fails. The little switch you found first is not a big failure part. The power has to make it through all switches to get the the brown wire at the cruise control unit under the hood.

The brown wire should have power when the brake pedal is not pushed. It looks like I screwed up what the test should show.

Here is how the test should read.

Unplug the wire connector from the cruise module on the cruise unit under the hood.
Check for power on the Pink wire with black stripe (with the key on) – there should be power.
Check for power on the Gray wire (with the key on and cruise switch on) – there should be power.
Check for power on the Brown wire (not touching the brake pedal) – there should be power.
Check for power on the Brown wire (while the brake pedal is pushed) – there should be NO power.

Re: cruise control

I looked at a schematic this morning.

The power for the brown wire that is not getting power when it should:
Goes through the fuse
Then through the cruise switch (signal lever)
Then through the first brake switch you found (square)
Then through the large brake switch (Curved)
Out to the cruise unit under the hood (brown wire)

Re: cruise control

ok ChevyTech, thx for checking that out.

i will do some testing

if it does happen to be the brake light switch, could i just bypass it and use the clutch switch as the safety to turn off the cruise?

Re: cruise control

ok, looks like i might have solved this problem.

tested brown wire, no power.

but getting my head back under the dash and having a look at the wiring coming from the cruise switch to my clutch switch and on to the brake light switch, i realized there wasnt any power going to the clutch or brake switch, and therefore no chance for the switches to cut off power by braking.

so realizing that power was needed i had a second(or was it 100th)look at the grey wire coming from the cruise switch and could see that there was electrical tape around it. took off the tape and there was a second connection that was broken. hooked this up to the grey wire coming from the clutch switch that i found earlier and success!!!

i now have power on the brown wire at the cruise control box under the hood. when i press the brake, the power cuts to the brown wire.
havnt tested by driving yet, but all of the tests point towards my cruise working again. i'll repost if it doesnt work

many thx to ChevyTech for helping figure this out

Re: cruise control

You're welcome!

You're making good progress.

The wiring in your truck is a mess. If it was my truck, I would spend the time to solder all those wires. I use heat shrink tubing instead of black tape anywhere I can.

I am waiting to hear that the cruise works.

Re: cruise control

the wiring is a mess, and i have been using heat shrink after i do testing or reconnect wires etc.

older left to right hand drive conversions are always going to throw up headaches, especially when they're done so poorly.

Re: cruise control

Would this be the same for a 1992 Full size blazer (Tahoe)? Mine does not work at all so I was wondering if this is the same. Thank you.

This test information should work for 1988 - 1994 C/K trucks.

If you need some more help on yours, then start a new thread because this on is getting long and a new thread will help prevent confusion.
