Re: Project "Do work son!"

FINALLY got around to updating this thread. I left my camera outside during a rain storm so I had to use the trusty 1972 Blackberry. I ended up getting a different/non a/c cab. I saved a ton of work by doing this as well as got a ton of parts to use and trade. I bought a '70 LWB for $350.

I was able to get the dash mocked up. I wanted it rounded over, but to stick out past the glove box door and gauges. I cut out the original dash and tacked in a piece of 1.75 exhaust tubing. I like it, but it needs something else.

The firewall is all welded up and needs to be ground down.

Gas filler is done.

The top ridge line is filled in and needs some grinding.

Doors are in place for the rocker replacement.

Got the hinges rebuilt. Had to do a little heat and beat on them, but they are nice and snug now.

I have the cursive chevrolet tacked in the glove box door. I'm considering moving it to the center of the dash where the pad would have gone. I cut the cursive portion out of an old valve cover that I found at a swap meet.

Filled in the dash where the radio went.

That's all for now. As always, comments and suggestions are welcome

Re: Project "Do work son!"

Really proud of my little girl. She completely media blasted the door hinges. She wouldn't stop bugging me until I let her do it. She did all four of them pretty much on her own. Good times with the munchkin.

A small update. DS rocker mocked up and ready to weld in. Nothing major.....but progress. That little flanging tool came in handy.

Looks great. How hard is shaving the drip rail? I have been contemplating it but haven't decided yet. It just basically involves cutting the old one off and tacking the seam back together right? Looking good so far.

Re: Project "Do work son!"

I was able to get a little progress completed this weekend. I cut out the Chevrolet lettering from an old tailgate and and fabbed it into the header panel of the bed. Nothing real significant, but I did manage to get a metal sliver in my eye on Thanksgiving(I was wearing my eye protection, but rubbed my eye with my hand). I had to have it removed and the rust drilled out today. The last picture is the metal in my eye taken by the optometrist.

Nice work on the truck! That really stinks about the metal in your eye. I'm digging the front bed panel and glove box! Nice work!

Re: Project "Do work son!"

Thank you sir. The metal thing has happened before when I used to cut without eye protection like an idiot... i was pretty surprised by this one. Simple mistake.

Re: Project "Do work son!"

getting the metal out sure does suck, 3 years ago a similar thing happened to me. A little piece of metal bounced off my garage floor when i was using a grinder and went right under my safety glasses. now i only wear safety goggles.haha btw i like the picture you got with the guys from GMG

I have had that done to me. My eye was drilled and had to wear that patch over my eye. I thought it would never get better. But that to did pass

Re: Project "Do work son!"

Man, that's some serious welding going on! I haven't done any welding since Ag 101 back in high school... and even then it was with 90 amps of arc welder. What kind of welder are you using?

Re: Project "Do work son!"

Thanks for the compliments guys. My welder is just a little Miller 180. nothing too serious. I do okay with it, but thank god for a grinder!

The eye feels better. I didn't have to wear a patch as they have a new bandaid that's a contact. Vision is a little blurry, but it should be good to hook tomorrow when I get it removed.

Re: Project "Do work son!"

When I saw your bed panel mod I was like heck yeah. I thought about copying you for a sec. But it'd be a waste of time on mine since I'll have a tool box in it.

There are some interesting ideas that come out of that though. Imagine having the CHEVROLET placed on the hood, on either edge... or if you could run it down the door. There are some interesting options, but I think that the problem would be in keeping it subtile, and not gaudy.
