Re: May I see some headliners?

Steel bars with inserts, thin board assisted by aluminum strips (to be covered with 1/4 foam and cloth), finished headliner. Heat shielding glued in before install.

Thank you for posting your headliner pics! So, did you cut the headliner out of what, or did you purchase the headliner? And you did not use the rubber mounting that would go around the entire headliner to hold it up? The aluminum strips basically hold your headliner in place?

It looks great!!

You can cut them out of "hardboard" from the lumber yard. Or if they don't have it the panels used for around shower/bath tubs works well.

Cool, Hardboard is also good for door panels, kick panels Etc. I do think if I lived in a humid or rainy climate I would use the water proof panels though.

Clarance, did you use the factory gasket??

I've always thought the gasket was kind of ugly so I wanted something different. Just didn't trust glue alone. There are nutserts on the steel strips inside the lip of the hole, and the bolts go through the aluminum and into the nuts so that when tight, the metal strips clamp together on the lip. The steel strips are siliconed in place at the ends to keep from sliding back and forth. I did end up pop riveting aluminum brackets on the ends of the board that slip inside the lip nearest the glass, because at speed with the glass down it would flop a little on the very ends. The heat insulation glued over lizard skin along with the 1/4 closed cell foam on the board make for a very quiet roof!

OKGMC4, I notice your interior body seams are filled. Did you weld them or did you use filler? How long ago and have you experienced any cracking?

Re: May I see some headliners?

I welded them first so I wouldn't have to use as much filler, and to keep potential movement down. Kind of like taping a drywall joint before mudding to prevent a crack. It's been that way for about three years but I've only been driving it the last 7 months (3800 miles) with no problems yet. CAL58 did the same thing in his gmc a long time ago. His is the truck that inspired me to do mine that way.

Re: May I see some headliners?

Ok thanks. I knew a guy many years ago with a very nice '56 that used Bondo only and his seemed to hold just fine; no cracks. Also there was an article recently in Rod & Custom (I THINK?) that also used filler, but a particular brand that was supposed to be extra crack-resistant. I've never liked how crude the interior seams looked.

Re: May I see some headliners?

denee; i used the same ultra suede cloth as i used on my seats. contact cement to stick the cloth to 1/8 foam. and contact cement to glue it to the roof. i wasn't able to get the stock rubber trim in after that. i used chrome door edge on the edge of the roof. i made a paper template 1 inch larger than the opening for the foam and cloth. i had tape to mark the center of the cloth and the opening. my wife helped me glue it to the roof, definitely a 2 person job. no pics of that part

Hello OrrieG, Yes I did. Purchased from Classic Parts. It took about an hour with a little fighting but was worth it.

I don't remember whose truck this is and it really is simple, but I liked the chrome door edge guard enough to save it to my computer.

Kustombrad used sign board plastic panels. He did a collage of old drag pics and had them vinyl them to the panels, then cut to fit. If I remember correctly I think he did the door panel the same way.
