How to remover interior door hinge bolt

I need to take off my door hinges. The top hinges have a bolt that comes in from the back side. How do I get it out. I'm sanding down for new paint and it would make it easier if they were off and I need to replace a broking spring and install new pins.

Re: How to remover interior door hinge bolt

The wrench looks like a box end wrench but is in the shape of a snail or "S" only bent with more curl to it.
I drill a couple 1/8 holes through my hinges and into the cab. When your done painting the doors you can use welding rod through the holes to get instant perfect alignment on your hinges.
I got the wrench from an old body man and I have never seen one like it at a auto parts store.
I would check with Snap-On tools.

Here is a picture of it but the one you want is 9/16 on one side and 1/2 on the other side. The one pictured is 11mm.

I can't see the head of the bolt to get a wrench on it.

You have to get at them from under the dash, I'm going from memory here but the driver side, I'm pretty sure you have to unbolt the parking brake assembly then look for a hole around where you'd figure the bolt would be(might be a plastic plug to remove). From there just use an extension with a 9/16 socket on the end to unbolt it. Pass side is the same idea, might have to remove the glovebox to make it easier.

Re: How to remover interior door hinge bolt

like already mentioned there is a plastic plug ( cover ) to remove on the inside at hinge level . A socket will then reach the bolt head . The first time I had to remove that bolt , I had a hard time finding it . Really weird set up .

Re: How to remover interior door hinge bolt

And I will add to this as already mentioned. there IS a plastic plug over the hole just above the plastic kick panel, no need to remove the parking brake.

The easiest way to do it on the driver side is to get a deep socket, tape the socket to the longest extension you can find and have a stab at it from the passengers side. tape the socket to keep it from falling off and getting lost forever in between the panels where it will squeak until your ears bleed for the life of the truck. ask me how i know lol

passengers side is only slightly easier because you can pop the 4 self tapping screws off that hold the glove box assembly to the dash board. then you can get your whole head in there to see what you missed on the other side of the truck. same tools tho. dont forget the tape!

Re: How to remover interior door hinge bolt

Why did they not just put them all on the outside?

remove the runbber grommet where the wire (for the interior light door pin switch) passes through the panel, once you remove the grommet you'll see the bolt head....

It's more trouble than it's worth to me. I think if I did get it out I wouldn't never get it back in. I just cut my pins out and took the hinge that bolts to the door off. Need to replace pins anyway.
What does the s shape rod do? My driver side is broke off, but it shut better than the other door. Can I just leave the s shape rod/spring off? It don't seem to be doing much to me.

The S shaped spring is what makes the door catch halfway instead of swinging freely all the way open. I replaced mine. It's pretty easy to replace.

It really is not as bad as it sounds. you gotta remove the bolts and thus the door hinges mounted to the truck to get all the jams painted proper anyhow.

the s rod and spring are the door catch and the parts that hold the door open so the door does not close automagically on you. and i think it also keeps the door hinge from over extending and screwing up the door on the hinge from opening too far.
