Problem routing exhaust piping past transmission crossmember.(pics)

I'm running into a problem installing my muffler and exhaust piping onto the truck. Basically, on the driver side only, the piping hits the transmission crossmember, not allowing everything to bolt and clamp together. As you can see in the pics, everything gets angled down. Truck has hooker long tube headers and plan is to run 2.5" exhaust. Have collector reducers, race bullet mufflers and turn downs. all in 2.5. Pics are just an example of the problem i'm having, not how i obviously plan on running the exhaust.


Anyone have any ideas how to solve this? Is there a perticular piece of bent pipe I could use to get the exhaust to clear under the crossmember? Or maybe there are better headers out there that hang low enough to clear the crossmember? or get a all new transmission crossmember?

Also what about full exhaust kits like the ones linked below? A full exhaust was my original plan, but had decided on more of a hot rod style by just dumping it right past the cab.

put a c-notch in the crossmember or let a muffler shop bend a piece to clear it.

Have the exhaust shop bend you a piece so you can run them above the crossmember on the drivers side. You should be able to run under the passenger side. You might have exhaust shop put a small bend for the pass. side too.

Take it to a shop and have a proper full exhaust put on it. You will be much happier.

I had mine bent over and around my crossmember, tranny and t-case on both sides. I ran into the same problem with my long tubes. Not the cheapest route, but you'll really be happier.

Have them both run above the cross member, keeps it completely out of sight.

In case the OP does no know what a "double hump" is, they are referring to the 73-74 trans crossmember which has a inverted hump for exhaust clearance on both sides of transmission. Before unleaded fuel and cat converters were required.
They may have used them on later C20 and C30 pickups as well.

They also should be on heavy duty trucks that are equipped with factory dual exhaust. Good place to look is big ten and heavy half trucks.

Using a factory transmission crossmember is the best way to go....BUT a few of the aftermarket air suspension guys (such as Porterbuilt and Ekstensive) carry a smaller version of just a single pipe going from frame rail to frame rail that makes it easier to route your exhaust. From $69-$89.

On a cheap route I went to the muffler shop on Sun. and looked through there bin and found the bends I needed,they throw away alot of new pipe that are mistakes.I think Heddman makes a ball type collecter than can swivel abit and no need for gaskets.I have them on mine but can,t remeber if they are heddmans
