Re: what do you guys think of these engine combos for the wow factor

Love the ITB's and Webers. Turbo'ed anything would be awesome. Flow-thru head on a 292. Or any GM 6 or 8 DOHC:

Or money no object:

Re: what do you guys think of these engine combos for the wow factor

I just redid the 250 inline in my wagon and of all the different old cars I have been taking to shows for decades, I have gotten more positive comments on this than an V8 I have had. V8's seem to be like belly buttons, everyone has one. This makes them do a double take.

Re: what do you guys think of these engine combos for the wow factor

I say go with a hopped up 6. Chevy Mike is right. The Chevy v/8 is everywhere including in my trucks. There are of course some stand out V/8 motors like Nailhead Buicks or Caddy 429'S but if you already have the 6 it will surely be a conversation starter every time you lift your hood at a cruise nite. And nice job Chevy Mike that does have a wow factor indeed.

THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A "CUMMINGS" ENGINE!!!

Say it with me- CUMMINS! Was that so hard?

Also, with 500HP, I think you can potentially reach speeds of up to 25MPH.

I've always been a fan of a nicely detailed inline 6, this one looks nice! That's certainly another good option.

The engine doesn't really matter much.

The cheapest way is probably to use a premade TBI unit for throttle plates, some sensors, injectors and fuel pressure regulator. I got a GM one for $55. The only other sensors needed were the air temp and coolant temp, about $35 new with plugs.

Then you need a computer, ECU, to take these sensor inputs and squirt the injectors the correct amount based on load and rpm. I use a pre-built Megasquirt II box for $444, they make ones for a lot less that would work on a basic setup too. It's internal MAP (load) sensor can read vacuum and boost so this would work great for turbo or SC later on. For the wiring, I bought a harness that plugs into the MS II box and then you make the rest by terminating it for each sensor input or device you want to control (injectors, idle control, fans, boost solenoid etc.). That was about $70 I think. So that's about $600 and you will eat the rest up with a fuel pump and other crap to plumb it all and rig up a throttle and stuff like that.

The best part is that later you could ditch the TBI and make yourself or buy a port injection setup and run it just the same way NA or boosted. The ECU i used can control timing via a distributor or even a coil on plug setup or coil packs. The options are endless really and any mechanical change you make can be carefully tuned to get the most out of it.

There are tons of different brands of standalone ECUs out there too. A used AEM EMS or an old Haltec could be other, cheaper alternatives. They all work the same for the most part.

That's a tiny one, how about a Wright R-3350 turbo-compound radial? There's a real engine for wow factor, lol. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wright_...Duplex-Cyclone

I have no idea personally. Was just a random picture that I came across. There is a link that I will find where there was a thread last year on the 67-72 side about this truck and a 68 GMC also that has an airplane engine in it with a video of it running. Ill post it in a few minutes when I find it...

I will note that I am no airplane mechanic, but the exhaust does not seem to be hooked up. It might just be sitting in the engine bay (work in progress kinda deal).

Here is the link to the 67-72 page on the truck....It was at the Spokane 2012 Goodguys show, so MarkB and a few of the others from that area may have seen it if they went.

Re: what do you guys think of these engine combos for the wow factor

Yeah, nothing on that radial engine was hooked up. I have since talked with a guy that knows the builder, and he claims that the guy has an idea on how to make it all work and drive. Goodguys is this weekend, so I'll be curious to see if it's there again.

Re: what do you guys think of these engine combos for the wow factor

Thanks Captainfab for the update. Im interested in this build also. I have no desire to do one myself, just interested to see how its going to all go together. Im guessing it'll be front wheel drive?
