Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
The truck was popping through the exhaust...and rough idling..The distributor was a little loose that I noticed, and I'm starting to think the 30 year Vacuum Advance is on its last leg, because well thats what I've been told

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Get a clean tank and flush the fuel lines, then check the timing. Do not pull the distributor until you have checked it. The timing light will show if the advance is working. Sounds like the timing may be a little retarded, creating the back fire, or carb is dumping too much fuel, or combination. Here is a good thread on timing the engine. Chilton's and Motor manuals from the era have good write ups with pictures and diagrams too. stovebolt.com has lots of info in the tech sections on stock trucks.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Why won't you buy a manual for your truck? So many of the simple things can be answered by looking up in the available manuals. Is it just easier for you to keep asking?

If you want something easy you need to look for a new game to play. The subject line is door lock and you threatened to go insane for that one. Now you've moved on to a dash light so what will you do for this one? Less drama and more reading might be appropriate.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
So helpful.Alright, if I look up under the dash it should be a bulb inside a switch type thing and i can get it right?..I bought an inline Fuel filter last night going to see about installing that, doing some "reading" I have found that my truck requires a new Vacuum Advance, so now I am on the hunt for one

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Here is photo of the back of the dash I found online with the lamps identified. If you have small hands and are flexible you can get to them from behind but the bezel is held in place with three screws. Some times it can be cranky to get out, they tend to hang up at the top; you might need to disconnect the speedo cable and oil line if there is not enough slack.
I am not even going to try and explain how to R&R a distributor or replace the vacuum online, you will need to poney up and get a manual or find the info. Chilton's or Motors from the era are on ebay and amazon all the time and have truck specific and unit specific diagnostic and repair procedures. I would only start replacing vacuum advance after I ruled out basic timing, etc. as explained before. Easy to check the advance with a timing light then you will know for sure.

You seem to panic when things are difficult yet you don't try the easy ways offered to you. I was being facetious when I said the easy way to work under the dash was to first remove the cab. But you got excellent advice to remove the unit from the dash so you could see it and maybe not screw it up. Same goes for your distributor, just one bolt and it comes out in your hand but you WILL need more instruction to put it back and make it run.

Thanks again Orrie for your help, I'll be sure to try that after I get this done For your information Indian I don't have the money to buy one of them right now and I HAVE LOOKED AT ONE AND GOT MY EYE ON ONE SO WHEN I GET THE "MONEY" I will buy it, I don't like drama damn !!!!! its actually very annoying , I'm getting sick of y'alls comments on things at times it makes no sense to me, I listen to you... and I ask to get quality answers, so please for the love of God stop.I don't look for Drama, I LOOK FOR ANSWERS..So again Stop

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
What I'm going to do is let my local Mechanic that lives right across the street try and help me ...It seems like if I get into it I won't know what to do and I know very little in that area...

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
My GMC is a '55 2nd so I can't be sure what is the same in a '59 but I am pretty sure the instrument cluster Orrie shows above isn't the same since it is a Chevy. Mine does not have a generator light so there may not be anything the same. There are 6 phillips head screws holding in the GMC cluster which is in 2 halves. The oil pressure line can limit how far you can pull it out as well as the speedometer cable. Here are a couple pics when I had my cluster out for rebuilding.
You can see 5 of the six screws in the first pic. The other one is in the center low but the steering wheel is blocking it. The next two pics are what each half looks like removed. In my truck the green one is the turn signal indicator and is the one below the clock. The lamp sockets will just pull out to change the bulb but they are a bit of a struggle pulling and pushing back in as the bulbs ground through the metal housings. The last pic is the cluster in a '58 or '59 GMC in a local scrapyard and you can see that this one is about the same as mine, so maybe yours too.

Re: Taking the Door lock out 1959
Nope. You are probably looking at the two screws to remove the cap. Look UNDER the body of the distributor and you should see a 9/16" hex head on a 3/8" bolt. Remove this and the distributor comes out in your hand. It will take a little wiggling. The shaft goes down into the bowels of the engine and drives the oil pump.
The distributor will be a foot long at least. It's not imperative but it is a good idea to take the distributor cap off and make a crude little sketch (or a cell phone photo) of which direction the distributor rotor is pointing. This will speed up putting it back together if you don't turn the motor over while the distributor is on the bench. It just dawned on me that you may be working on this in dimly lit single garage. That's a handicap in itself.
