Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

There are plenty of old trucks for us all ,no matter what part of this world we call home .Im just glad they are being driven and restored and enjoyed, not crushed .If not for the old car and truck hobby my list of friends would be much smaller and I have had the good fortune to meet quite a few of you guys on here and hope to meet more .

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

So this is my first post on this forum, have been reading it for a while now but this seemed a good place to introduce myself, as I am an English guy who has just in the last couple of weeks taken delivery of a 52' 3100 So kinda felt I could offer another point of view on this subject.

So basically I have always been crazy into my classic cars, especially American classic cars. So much so my last project was a 72 mk1 ford capri. Which (for those of you that aren't familiar With European classics) was about the closest thing we got to a u.s muscle car. She was my absolute pride and joy, however it was never quite the same as having the real deal.

So long story short I set my self a goal. Spent the last couple of years working my *ss off saving every penny i could, searching for suppliers, researching importing processes, models etc just trying to find the right project. Finally found a good company who had found the right model and after paying a ridiculous amount of money compared to what you can get them for over there, waited another 10 weeks for it to get here, and I now have in my garage what is essentially (to my wife at least!) a 61 year old rust heap that barely rolls let alone drives yet is to me my absolute pride and joy and Is a realisation/start of a dream!

So guess what I am trying to say is-it must be horrible to see them on the boat getting ready to leave, but hopefully it will be some consolation the amount of joy/excitement we get receiving them the other side! Also given the sheer effort/cost it takes to get over here, you can rest assured every one of those beauties is on its way to home it will be looked after!!

Besides last time I was out your way I saw sh** loads of Jags, minis, mg's etc (I'm pretty sure I saw a land rover in the distance once!) So stop you're b*tchin!

Hope that's softened a few people's views as I will be relying on advice from you guys in the following months/years!!

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

I know here in Arkansas you can sell/crush any vehicle without a title. For a long time they did not even ask for an ID. So we lost tons of old trucks and parts to the crusher. There is a marked difference in the available parts these days compared to several years ago when steel was not as valuable to recycle.

My opinion, as long as they are fixed up and enjoyed by someone, I don't care where they are. At least they aren't being scrapped.

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

So, you are angry at europeans for bying trucks that americans want to sell, and by doing so, raising the value on the trucks that remain in the states (yours included)...?
Sorry, but I dont see what the problem is! Am I missing some vital point here?
I think there are enough to go around, for all of us...

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

I have no problem with vintage vehicles leaving for foreign shores. As previously stated, they are likely going to a good home. An old truck lover is an old truck lover; nationalism is just another form of prejudice.

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

I thought this was a pretty well know thing. I thing its funny that people act like there is a dwindling supply of chevy trucks. I mean if you choose the rarest option truck to make a point of course it's going to look that way, but the truth is there are a TON of these trucks all over the country. I'd rather see them shipped away to someone who wants to restore it than leave it in a field here so you can say you see 50-60 of them while you drive through town. Because they don't get rebuilt just because you know where they are. Also, there are hundreds of restoration parts companies in America who now have the chance at selling parts to help the restoration. its a great thing to see them leave, it means they now have a chance at being a truck again!

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

Trucks sitting behind garages, barns and rotting in fields DO not require replacement parts, trucks being restored, restomoded or resurrected in any form do..

This will benefit all of us, as competition among the aftermarket manufactures increases so will the pressure for a better product..

Does anyone here think that there are enough people building trucks in the U.S alone to keep the manufactures fighting for our business... I don't think so....

I have seen the international buyers buy both the cream of the crop and also scrape the bottom of the barrel when it comes to buying old U.S. iron..

I have seen them save many autos that were crusher bound!

All I now is I will soon have the only one of these trucks in the US without an S-10 frame under it.

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

Not true, Martin. The '54 I'm building for a customer will be on the stock frame, as will the '54 Panel my wife drives.
In fact, I intend to do my wife's in stages so that I can show a customer how to build it on a budget. You know, add disc brakes, drive it for a while, add power steering, drive it...etc.
Right now I'm in the "remove the car torque tube a previous owner installed and install the proper length truck torque tube" stage. Might also call this the "fix the previous owners F-ups" stage.

Re: Old Trucks Leaving the Country

You won't see any S-10 frames under anything I put together Martin unless it didn't have an available frame to begin with. Some of the S-10 swaps I've seen lately are as cobbled together as some of the redneck 4x4's around here that used pipe nipples for the spacers for the body lift rather than buy or build proper spacers. Same breed of cat building them though.

I'd much rather see an old truck go overseas into the loving hands and garage of someone like Hatch83 where it will be cherished and reborn than turned into a hacked up rat rod or hauled to the crusher by some clod who only sees the $$$ the scrap yard pays. They love our trucks just as much as we do and have to jump through more flaming hoops than a circus poodle to be able to have them along with laying out tons of cash in the process.

77 C 30 dualie, 454, 4 speed with a 10 foot flatbed and hoist. It does the heavy work and hauls the projects around.
