Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

66Submarine and hotrod66, I'm really digging your tires. What size are each of you running?

I got myself some 265/76/R16 tires on some Metal Moto wheels, but they are just a smidge too wide. Was thinking it's the wheels, but they don't seem wider than 16x8. Maybe it's the size of the tires themselves that are making them so wide? I would have expected 265/75 to fit though. I'm afraid if I put anything heavy in the bed, the rear tires will rub on the fenders.

They look like street tires, but they are AT tires. I go back and forth between liking them or not. I'm probably going to sell them in the next few weeks and go back to the "original" steelies with some 235/85/R16 tires (to go back to the look you guys have).

Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

Yeah, the stepside trucks don't have a ton of room for wide tires. I have 16x6.5 GM steel wheels with 245/75R16 on the front and 235/85R16 on the back.

Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

It's dark, but I tried to take a couple pictures for you. As you can see, even with 235/85's there isn't an excessive amount of room (IMO). I'm still thinking of trying to wedge a 265/75 in there, but it will be tight...

FWIW, on my truck the 235/85's on the front also rubbed the steering box slightly with the wheels at full right lock (IIRC).

And I just got done with wheels and tires on my "new" car today! Funny coincidence.

Thanks guys. 66Sub, your rear tires look reeeaaaal close to the fenders, but I take it they are not rubbing when you load up the bed?

Hasn't been a problem. That's also the worst side (rear end isn't quite centered) and a truck that hasn't side-swiped a bunch of stuff has a little more clearance IIRC (I'll measure). I pried them back out somewhat the other day, but I'm not sure how close to the original width they are. I think you should be good with 235/85's.

I'm actually thinking of taking a hammer to the fenders again and trying to fit a 265/75 under there.

Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

Worse than I remembered; even after prying it out that fender is still around 12.25" wide and my '64 that hasn't been run into as much stuff is about 12.875" (side-to-side alignment of the rear is actually pretty good). Here's a picture of the good side; pretty nice fit with 235/85's IMO.

Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

remember lucky our trucks are coil over submarine's truck is a one ton with leafs. our trucks will have more side to side play than his due to the pan-hard bar shoving the axle over to one side, when there is a load it makes it worse.

Nice score on the bed side. That would more like $400.00 around my rusty part of the country.

thats a little scary, but there all rusty at this point its just to what extent. every truck i have owned has needed rockers and some form of floor repair. i am sure there are some survivors but there getting harder and harder to find.

Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

Well another successful day at the junkyard. I bought the suspension out of a 71
c-20 to put under my 64 so I have disk brakes . I had a hard time trying to get it out with hand tools so the guy that owns the place let me take the hole truck home, have to bring what's leftover back. I also found some neat gmc hub caps and emblem off a old bread truck.

Did the '71 have a Dana 60 or the Eaton HO52 differential?

Re: new to me 64 3/4 ton

Well got the 71 pulled apart I'm certain it's a Eaton differential.
I also painted one of my hubcaps to make it match the truck.
If anyone knows what the axial is for certain please let me know.

Yep, that is an Eaton HO52/72. You might be lucky and it will have 4.10 gears.

Hopefully it is I was told the trucks that were automatic had 4.10, whether that's true or not I don't know.the truck the axial came from was a 4 speed.
