Motor Oil

So I have an original style hyd flat tappet camshaft from Comp Cams and so far so good. It was my goal when I did a top end rebuild on this 100 k mile engine to get at least another 50 k out of it.

Comp Cams recommended their engine break in additive at every oil change pointing out to me that all motor oils do no longer have the Zinc and other additives that make a oil more friction reductive.

So far to date the only other thing I have found is the Valvoline VR-1 that has the same properties in a oil.

Well I have over 50 k now, and will be re-building most likely in the next year or so due to bottom end wear. I can still zhit and git without worry of losing something.

Who would know of other manufactures of quality stuff? Or what have you done to overcome today's crappy oils?

If it has had decent maintenance I wouldn't worry much about it or the miles as long as it is performing OK

Brad Penn sells the old green Kendall like oil that has performed well in the past. The additive package can harm modern cats, but most of us don't run one.

I've been using the Brad Penn 10W30 oil myself in a fresh rebuilt 350 sbc with a hydraulic flat tappet cam. I have 6500 miles on it. I haven't had a single problem.

I use joe gibbs hot rod oil. no problems. my local napa carries it too which was a plus

Red Line oil also has the additional zinc needed for flat tappet cams, so you don't have to use an additional additive.

Rotella + lucas additive here , you realy only need the additive for breakin , if you use rotella

I use Comp Cams break in oil. I talked with Comp Cams and the only difference in their regular oil and break in oil is the levels of zinc. The break in oil by the case at Amazon is typically $63.99, I'm not running a catalytic converter, so I'm comfortable just sticking with the break in oil. I've got close to 7K miles on my rebuilt 402 with no issues. This can be a touchy subject for some, so this is just my .02 cents or in this case $63.99.

I always run an additive with 10w30 Valvoline after my last flat tappet cam got destroyed in my mind the extra insurance is still cheaper than a whole rebuild and the time involved

lycoming and Continental aircraft companies sell an engin oil supliment, typcally available through FBO's or vendor who cater to general aviation. approved by the manufacturer and the FAA.

That is interesting, I have a friend who has a few planes. I know about the av gas also. Seems to me the true things we had as fuel and oil is only available through the aviation world.
