58 hood latch question

hey guys, Im over from the 67-72 side with a question for ya. I'm restoring a 58 for a friend of mine that's just about complete. It sat in his garage since 1981 in boxes because he didn't like the color the last painter sprayed it! Anyhow it painted and going back together now, only problem Ive run into is the hood latch. I have the latch that attaches by the radiator but I don't have the catch that goes on the hood, Im curious what it looks like and where I can get one. Lmc doesn't even show anything for it. It could very well be shoved in a box in his garage yet I don't know exactly what I'm looking for! Thanks in advance guys. I know we all love pics so Ill attach a few

Re: 58 hood latch question

awesome thank you! now the question is where can I get one? I have the brace that runs front to rear on the hood and the x brace but not the one for the latch or the latch mechanism...

Re: 58 hood latch question

The latch mechanism is sold just about every major vendor:
http://www.truckandcarshop.com/trucks47_59/t47_074.html

For the catch bracket Have you checked the classified ads on the forum?
someone has a 58 GMC paring out
Other :craigslist/ebay may be the best bet find someone selling a hood and see if they will part with that piece

There is a guy up here in Ft.Worth on craigslist has a vast collection of TF truck parts Lynn, real nice guy, he may ship it to you, cant hurt to ask, here is a link to one of his ads:

Definitely a cool place to be! Gonna have this thing finished up in a couple of weeks, mainly waiting on the new vent window assemblies to arrive. Then she goes home and onto the next project....Oh heres a few newer pics

That is one of the other parts that isn't repoped is the 58 spear.
Nice job on the 58.
Does any one know when they would've started selling the next years model ? Did they start selling 59's in 58? like they do now?

In the 50's and into the 60's the model year started in September. I remember as a kid the dealers would cover all the windows and take delivery of the new cars at night. When they took down the paper and opened the doors we would all ride out bikes down to ogle the new models, I started at the Chevy dealer so I could see the newest Corvette first. There is a possibility that if yours is a late 58 model with say H-xx-8 date codes on the original parts (if any remain) that they may have just ran out of old parts and put on the newer fenders and trim knowing most farmers would not care. More likely is it got damaged in the front and someone swapped out the fenders, or may even just liked the 59 trim better.

Ford broke tradition in 64 to introduce the 64 1/2 Mustang before the new Chevelles, GTO's and Gran Sports came out.

Re: 58 hood latch question

unfortunately the whitewalls were a must for him. The 59 fender badges were accompanied by a 59 hood emblem. I was able to talk him into the 58 hood emblem because in my opinion its way cleaner looking. he was back and forth on the fender spears but decided to keep the ones he had. Thanks for the compliments guys. I'm hoping to have it finished up in the next week or so. Only big thing I'm waiting on is the new vent window assemblies.

Re: 58 hood latch question

This is a beautiful truck, and I agree with the owner about keeping the whitewalls, but I don't think the wheels compliment the truck. I think some steel wheels with caps and trim rings would be more in line with the theme of the truck.

Cadman, love your truck.
