Suburban Rear Bumper

Yet another mystery.

Took a look in the TECHNICAL SERVICE DEPARTMENT manual for 1963.
The specs are the same as the front bumper.
CK 1405, 06, 16 C3605
Material: High Tensile Steel
Gauge, nominal: .147
Width, maximum: 78.54
Height, maximum: 6.67
Availability: Standard Painted
RPO V37 Chrome
There's no notes mentioning a cutout.

Why some have it and others don't is the question. I am confident it is the original bumper to my truck. My truck is a late '66 Fremont-built 2WD with 15" wheels.

my 65 is a Fremont truck, but I think my 64 is a Janesville, I will get some pics and info tomorrow. both were 1/2 ton 2wd, and both had a spare tire cutout in the gas tank. ( did all subs come with a underneath spare?)

That was my thinking as well. You would usually find a different part number if anything changed in the design. GM would have stated if there was a different part number for optioned wheel changes.

This is the only vehicle I know of that uses the essentially the same bumper front & rear. And neither looks out of place- like it was forced to work. Really a great design and great example of re-using parts to save money. Anyone know of another car/truck that can claim this?

Now I say a great design but at the same time it was lousy in the sense that it provided no step which would have been useful on the barn door trucks. On the tailgate 'burbs it was not necessary.

I always assumed all C10 Subs & Panels came with the underneath spare. I'm not aware of a spare tire delete option nor any interior spare tire mount option like later Blazers.

Does anybody have some input on the rubber flashing between the rear bumper and back of the suburban. Is it neccesary? Is this part reproduced?

I don't think that seal is reproduced. I took a piece of it to a local A/C/Heating shop and told them what I needed and they made me one from aluminum. I had to cut the ends of where it curves around the body, but the main piece is there and is mounted using the original screws. I then paint it to match the body. I will post a picture of it here shortly so you can see it.

Here are some pics of the metal shield I had made. It's real hard to see being painted black, but when I re primer the back door, I will get a better shot. There is also a pic from underneath, and the piece of pipe tape, is for a short seal I am trying to make from some sponge-rubber I got at an old job.

sorry. I'm going to be primering the rear door Sunday so will take the bumper off and get a better pic then from the top and the end.

Your Welcome. I just cleaned and put it in gray primer. I am definately going to put some sealer between it and the body, as it collects dirt in the seam and I don't want any rust.
