Ugh!

Opened the Advance Auto box today: radiator is aluminum and plastic. So much for their website pictures.

I will call about this Rock Auto radiator tomorrow!

Ya, Rockauto sometimes doesn't give much info on the items they sell. That's why I try to check other websites for the same item.

I wouldn't have bought it if it wasn't all metal, 4 core, and had a thick core. If it was plastic, I would have gone for aluminum radiator made by Champion from Jegs or Amazon.

I went this Vista-Pro because it was a lot cheaper and was what I wanted.

The all metal radiators started drying up a few years ago. I picked up my 4 row locally at advance or autozone for about $225 around 2008. The ones left I see on ebay for like $400. Everyone seems to carry the plastic tank version now.

That's odd. I looked inside of mine and the sides are brass just like my old radiator was. You could also see the brass on the sides where the paint was scrapped off from a scratch.

Here's a pic of my radiator.



Here's where I cut the fan shroud. It's where the bottom of radiator support dips in and now you see the edge of the radiator going across that area.

Rock auto has wicked selection and prices, but they're just a drop ship order taker. They don't (so far as I know) carry any inventory, they've just connected a bunch of warehouse supplier databases. Wish I'd thought of it!

But in terms of getting product info, you need to know what you're ordering because they'll have no idea.

I finally got the quote for the radiator today, $680 and that is using my tanks. I will keep searching since Houston is a big city. I am already having to spend about 3k with C&R for a radiator and a heat exchanger for an LS9 in the

Some finer points you may or may not be aware of with radiator materials. Aluminum is not a good material in these era vehicles based on this premise. Most of the radiator cleaners of the day were acids, corrosive to red oxide, mineral build up, scale and the sort....Yet ok on raw cast steel, copper, and brass.

I wrote a short article on how I cleaned out my system with using oxilic acid and neutralizing with Arm and Hammer Super washing soda.

For all those sensitive types, most green leafy vegetables contain this acid, including Popeyes favorite, Spinach.

Now how can I make mother nature work better for me.

Well I got the 4 core brass and copper from Rock Auto and it's a big sucker! Sure enough, all copper and brass. I may have to modify my core support just slightly to get it in there but just cutting out a couple of slots and drilling one hole.

I ran my old radiator (2 row) over to the radiator shop but the owner took one look and said "half rotted." He said he could recore it but for a big bill. Apparently it has a lot of corrosion and he said "some things are better left unfixed" as doing so would cause more leaks. I will keep it though.

The aluminum and plastic radiator from Advanced Auto fit my core support perfectly though but I'll just sock it away in case I need it.

That price sounds about right, I guess... I was quoted $640 to have my 67 Nova's 4 core re-cored. I bit the bullet because it is original to the car... Last time I had one done was several years ago, in Los Angeles, and it wasn't half that much.

It seems to sit very close to the fan...I am not sure if it is "too close" however.

I'll have to study this further.

Are you using a short water pump or a long one? I just ordered one for my C10 based on your post earlier. I hope it fits.

I have no idea which water pump I have. Here is what my truck is though.

Custom 10, 1972, 260 straight six engine. Would that be short water pump? I do not have a clue. The engine and everything attached to it is stock from factory.

Good luck to you too! If I cannot get this 4 row to fit, I'll have to figure out something else. The radiator seems like a good buy though....you V8 guys may be what it was intended for.

I missed that you have a six. I think 6 cyl just has one water pump style. They are closer to the radiator than the V 8s are.

I have a sbc V8 with a short water pump with (I think) 2" or 1 1/2" spacer with 7 blade clutch fan and engine in the stock position. The fan is around 1/2" away from the radiator. (I know you have a I6.)

Also, I think I mentioned earlier, I'm using Goodmark 4 core radiator brackets that I bought from Rockauto. The top and bottom bushings had to be cut down to almost 1/4" maybe 1/8" to fit properly.

Ya, I have the I6 and no desire to put in a V8....I'll get another truck, hopefully with the original V8!

As long as the fan and radiator don't meet.....it's not like either one will be flopping around I guess.

I'll look into it more tomorrow. Perhaps I was using my original radiator clamps yesterday, I think I have a 4 row set I bought on the parts forum and once I find those I'll give those a try.

I really want to make this 4 row radiator work....

Dad said the 2 row that was in the truck IS the original factory radiator! I may have it recored if necessary.
