Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

It was found in Corbin Kentucky. In what the tow company guy called a "strip pit in the woods" Not sure if the insurance is going to cover it they haven't returned my calls yet.
It was locked up and there were no keys in it when it was stolen. It was backed in right up against the window of the room I was in at the hotel. There was no glass or any other marks or debris around. It was just gone.
I'm not angry, yet. I'm just happy it was found and now it is a blank slate to make exactly the way I want it.
I just have to wait for the Richmond PD and the Knox county sheriff to complete their investigation so I can get it home.
If you live in the area watch out for any stolen parts and take extra precautions with your truck.

Man that just sucks. Sorry to hear this. People nowadays are just getting worse and worse. I am going to get this installed on my vehicles. Has not been defeated in 40 years since it came out. Worth the money they ask for it for sure.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

I think this is the final straw for me too. I keep reading stories about people's trucks getting stolen so easily on these forms. Since mine is one of those rare step sides that are hard to find chop shop thieves will likely be interested in stealing it. Time for me to get an alarm or detererrent.

What puzzles me about your truck is the fact that it seems like it was wrecked and THEN stripped. If the truck was wrecked that badly (as evidenced by the trashed bumper) before it was stripped then the parts that are off of it would be no good at all. So did they drive it without the parts and then crash into something? All this makes no sense. I hope that my fellow police officers will be able to get fingerprints off of that.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

There are various home brew vehicle trackers that will report to YOU where the vehicle is.
Lojack is 1980's technology. Don't bother.
Most trackers will only send the info to law enforcement.

I like the CalAmp LMU4225 that I use at work.
It has a 56 channel GPS receiver that is extremely effective even inside many buildings.
When it's loaded with a SIM provisioned for texting and Mobil data you can text "!R5" to the phone number of the unit and it will text back the lat and long of where it is. I can send those to Google maps and then go retrieve my property with 12 of my best friends with shotguns. I have a geofence setup on my vehicles that texts me when they leave the defined safe area. Very bad idea to steal from me. I will find out instantly and I will come with some very rough and dangerous people to retrieve it NOW.

The unit has a backup battery that lasts over 24 hours. My Application sends data to the server every 30 seconds outside the geofence so I can find out where it last pinged the server even if the battery has run out.

There are plenty of home brew options using Rasberry PI or one of several other development boards.

Sorry to hear about your truck. I have a kill switch on mine, but looks like it is time to consider additional options.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

Older cars and trucks are pretty easy to steal.Besides busting out the steering wheel lock you can steal one of these trucks with a screw driver.A lot of the anti theft stuff only works so far nothing can beat a tow truck. The gps stuff works but if they are smart enough brass mesh over the antenna or a cell phone jammer can kill the gps tho.The best thing is the best insurance you can afford just case it does happen.

I know this really doesn't mean much. But after years of being around tow trucks. Where you park your truck and how you park and help deter the thieves. Park in a place a rollback/wrecker can't get in position to load, have you front wheels turned in one direction all the way. And the column locked. It will slow them down a bit.

The new auto load wheel lifts can take anything up to 180 degrees and even cars parallel parked with a car on each end.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

Finally got the truck released from the police. I went on Tuesday to Corbin to get it. It is worse than I thought. Before they stripped it they did some joy riding in it and ran into something, Hard. The frame is bent in several places. The cab is touching the bed on the right side and a 4 inch gap on the left.

The frame contacted the header and cracked. It broke the left shock and pushed the bushing out the front of the upper control arm.

Looking for a donor truck now.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

Pretty sad. I don't know if it's better to get it back or not. It looks like you need another truck to put your cab and bed (the sentimental part) on and piece it all back together. That would be a labor of love since it would be easier to just buy another complete truck. It sucks all the way around.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

So I pulled the crumpled up pieces of the front end and pulled the engine and trans. The frame is worse than I thought.
To craigslist..... Found a 1987 r10 short bed that's red. Drove the 3 hours on Saturday and checked it out and brought it home.
Here is the details:
1987 r10 137000 miles
350 TBI 4spd Manual
Almost completely stock.
very minimal options. No cig lighter, no dome light, crank windows etc.
the only options seems to be a/c and factory bedrails.
A pile of receipts, original dealer sales pack, owners manual.
the engine was replaced a few years ago and they threw in the original engine and exhaust manifolds.

I haven't even unloaded it yet. When I get it unloaded I will take more pics. Now to scavenge all the good parts off of my truck and give it a proper burial.
I think I will start a project thread.

My dad showed me this a few weeks back and it made me really anxious, being from Kentucky and all! They did a lot of damage it seems, good luck on the build and nice find! I'll be watching the build thread.

Re: 1986 swb stolen in Richmond Kentucky

yrik, I'm glad you are moving forward quickly. You are going to be making new memories soon. You'll probably not forget about it being stolen, but at least that terrible set of memories starts being averaged in with the new ones. Good luck and thanks for telling us about this. I think you have convinced many to take added precautions, so you may have saved a few trucks that way. I hope that you do a thread on your new truck or the merging of the two.
