Here's a short video of my engine running today. Does it give any information about the engine's timing?

I looked up Harbor Freight and found that the timing light only costs $30.00 but will try to ask around to see if it will be possible to borrow one. It seems like an item that I might not use to often.

First thing I'd do is check the point gap or dwell on your points. Worn or misadjusted points can retard your timing.

And it sounds like your idle is too high. Turn it down when you check your timing.

To answer a previous question, yes.. it seemed like I had to give it a third or half throttle in order to get moving in first.. and that I could drive about 15 miles an hour still in first. I think that the gear ratios in the tranny are close to each other. Each shift adds only about another 10 mph.. so that 2nd and 4th are not helpful.. and 5th is.. crap, everyone is passing me and looking funny.

Give me some suggestions about where to buy a quality seal for the rear-end inspection cover and what is the best fluid to top it off again. I want to open it up and see exactly what rear-end ratio my truck has. Thank you. Have a good Friday. TGIF

And now you're gonna sidetrack!!
Likely nothing wrong with your rear gears, tranny gear ratio's or your clutch.
You need to fix your lack of power from your motor. A sharp tuneup is in order.
Check the points and replace them and check and set your timing.

You can determine rear ratio without opening the diff. Although changing the oil isn't a bad idea. NAPA or Autozone/Advance/O`Rielly will have the gasket you need and the last 3 may have a timing light available on the free loaner program. I agree that you should sort out the engine first thing. A proper tune up is standard maintenance anyway, starting with compression test and valve adjust.

What I do is jack one wheel, with posi I guess it would need to be both wheels. With a marker like some chalk on a tire it is easy to get a pretty close approximation of what ratio you have by counting driveshaft turns for one revolution of the tires, two revolutions if only one tire in the air.
