1967-71 Door Panel Skins

Has anyone ever put new repro door panel skins on plain steel 67-71 door panels?
How do they attach to the door panels?
Is it a real pain or something that is pretty doable?

Are you asking about outer door panel skins ? (the outside of the door) If so, then yes I have....plan on replacing the door bottoms at the same time. Patch panels are available.

I'm going to reskin my passenger door.

My plan is to use panel adhesive so to get the body lines aligned correctly.

I'm still researching the best method to fold and crimp the edges.

Its very easy in my opinion to apply the interior door panel vinyl skins to the steel door panels. Thoroughly clean the original door panels and wipe down with acetone or similar product. You use a spray on vinyl adhesive on both and then lay the skin on the steel door panel aligning the holes for regulator and door relay while smoothing it out ( I use a small paint roller to roll over the door skin applying pressure), there is enough material to comfortably fold it over the edge wrapping onto the back ( Be sure to apply adhesive around the back edges of the door panel skin where its folded over onto the back ).

Yes I'm talking about the vinyl pieces on the inner door panels sorry for the confusion.
The door panels in my '71 are just the plain painted panels and I'd like to upgrade them. But I do have a set of olive green deluxe panels from a '70. Would it be easier to just paint the green ones? Is there a paint that will stick well to the vinyl?

They do make a vinyl paint but I've never had good luck with color lasting. You might speak with a local upholstery shop on what they may charge to change the color on the green version you have.

I have used finishmaster automotive interior paint with great sucess. It is pricey but very durable. Find a Finishmaster near you and they should be able to help you out.

I reskinned my door panels back in the spring and it went pretty good. I had the edges bunched up a little bit so they were a little tough going back in the door.

I bought my repro skins about a year ago but just put them in back in March or April. I got the black ones from Brothers I believe and they are really nice quality if you ask me. They were easy to install but there were about 4 legs on each one I had to cut off to get the edges to sit flush. I am really happy with the product and it looks much better than driving without door panels.

So the skins can just be glued to the metal door panel piece?i see pre-assembled for 180, and just the skins for 110... i have the metal door panel, just no upholstery
