If you put the transmission about halfway into reverse..the cover will come off without too much trouble....put it back in the same way....the reverse shift fork has to go way down in the case to engage the reverse slider...a little tricky the first few times...
Are all the top covers the same? Thanks

It worked great. I ran steel E-brake cables bolted into the sides of the transmission and fed the cables through a steel pipe. I turned the steel pipe to raise and lower the trans from inside the cab. I lowered the SM465 onto a piece of plywood and dragged it out from under the truck.

The setup looked like...well lets say "less than attractive", but it was very easy to maneuver the trans with such a mechanical advantage.

Yeah, it wasn't pretty but in about 30 minutes I had the ability to R&R my trans by myself.

Is the best way to do this is to take the transmission out first and then take the bell housing out after ? If so did you put it in the same way or bot together ?

Removing the SM465 was easier (for me) by leaving the BH attached to the motor. When I installed my NV4500, I had to install both the trans and the BH as a unit because I had drilled/tapped the trans to accept bolts and used the original cast iron BH. The modification then necessitated bolting the BH on with bolts to the inside so the NV must go in with the BH attached. (In my case)

Still, it was very easy to align and adjust while suspended from the cables.

I really need to get the dump out of the garage . Since the shifter was in there pretty tight with one pin and I put new pin on the side I broke and was tight I am going to JB weld the top part that’s Chipped . I am going to look for another cover . When you look at what really is holding the shifter in it looks like thin sheet metal. Who knows the JB weld might last forever. I really don’t use the dump much in my lawn care business maybe 1000 or so miles a year.

Re: Muncie SM465

I can take a few pictures of taking the cover off and putting it back on if you want it’s not hard at all. My trans is on the floor in the shop.

Thanks if it’s not to much trouble. It would make me feel a lot better to see it done. Do you think there is enough room to change it if the transmission is in the truck ? Thanks a lot I really appreciate it.

Re: Muncie SM465

I can probably send a video if you have a phone number or email address. Yes it will come off with the trans in the truck just remove the high hump.
