VSS vs ESS? Whats the difference

I read that VSS is mechanical and ESS is just electronic? is this correct?
And if so why did the engine I got come with both of the wires being used?

The ECM came out of a 2005 chevy Silverado 2500 HD 4x4? was it for part of the four wheel drive application?

Also, if the statement above is correct, what did everyone use in their swap? an VSS setup or and ESS setup?
Why did you choose to go that route? and what are some good brands of the one you choose to go with,

Never heard of an ESS? Where did you see that? What wires are you talking about?

When I googled ESS it says (engine start/stop) mode...is this what your talking about?

I was using lt1swap as a reference for the pin locations on the ecm. It's mentioned that pin 10 on red connector is the ESS signal.

Then on a different page labels 2 other pins as vss high and vss low...

This is pulled from the page for the ESS
Pin 10 - White - Engine Speed Signal - Tach signal. Stock programming of the PCM will output a 4 cylinder tach signal. When I program the PCM, I can change this signal to a 8 cylinder. This way you don't have to modify your tach.

No sir it isn't, when refer to lt1swap, this is one of the pages that I use for reference. I just pulled the section and pasted here.

Maybe I'm backwards and ESS for for rpm and VSS is for vechile speed

Yes, the white wire is for a tach. It is completely separate from the VSS speed signal which is for the speedometer.
