Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
Looking for a canister as mine has been contaminated with gas, truck started running rough and had gas come out one of the lines going into the canister, this is the Part# 17061005BT. All the parts places have them discontinued, engine is a 305. I purged the canister with shop air and put it back in and the truck runs normal, just a short term fix till I can get a new canister

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
I didn't realize they could go bad. It seems like it could return to normal service after drying it out. I'm willing to get an education here. I thought that the canister was a place for unburnt gas vapor to to be captured when a vehicle is shut off and then drawn back in to be burned once the vehicle is running again. So I would have guessed that your problem is in the return line. That the vapors aren't being drawn off and burned.

For future reference, I saw a video once on how to rebuild them. Must have been on youtube.

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
I remember looking that info up myself about rebuilding or whatever. For me, the price of the new canister was worth not going thru the hassle. For the most part those canisters looked to be somewhat sealed.

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
Yup mine was sealed but the 1983 GM shop manual shows it as being open bottom with an air filter???. Turned mine upside down and drained all the fuel that was in it then blew air thru it to dry but mini chunks of charcoal started blowing out so I knew it was toast

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
If you have Charcoal canister and it's not broken from these year and it not to dirty in side or too much oil has got in to it.
You can save the charcoal by trying to dry it out but with controlled air pressure to lower the air going in. (low air pressure just enough for air get throw but not blow up the charcoal up and out.) You could try like a fish air pump maybe. I would do this out in hot day in the sun do this a few times let it sit for a week. Then make sure it got a new filter keep clean.

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
loco, good luck with the emissions test. In my build I am keeping the emisions (as much as needed here in AZ) luckily my truck still had the OG canister...

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
Why even mess with it and delete it. Plug of the vacuum lines and put a filter on the line coming from the tank. and throw it way. That's what I do anyway. Thare not needed unless you have emissions whare your from. Which if you do I'm sorry.

No can do, the Smog NAZIS here go over the engine bay with a fine tooth comb, If you don't pass the visual test it's over let alone having to run the truck on the rollers.

But... It could actually burn much cleaner on actual emissions (like a newer vehicle) yet be failed because a 'visual' inspection says a specific part is missing. So even though that EGR isn't there any more & it pollutes half as much as the standards require, it's a fail. You know.... Saving the Planet & all.

Re: Charcoal cannister, 1983 Silverado
Well the old girl passed her smog test, gave her a good tune up, cap and rotor, plug wires and plugs. oil change and new air filter, i'm sure the new charcoal canister helped as the old one was full of gas. Good for another 2 yrs.
