PTO swap question

I am putting a nv4500 in my 1980 1 ton. I swapped the unit from the old 465. Problem is, the nv4500 housing is larger and will not allow the drive shaft to bolt up to the pto. Do they make different PTO units that space this out farther? Is there a different solution?
Thanks guys

Re: PTO swap question

I will admit, I didn't think the pto units would be compatible between a sm465 and a nv4500. Make sure that the gears are definitely compatible before you run it, otherwise you'll ruin both the transmission and the pto unit.

Re: PTO swap question

yes they take different internal gears. and they have different offset housings as well. also depends on what year your nv4500 is. the early and late ones take a different gear too. one is 25 teeth I believe and the other is 30, due to the different 1st ratio. I have one off a 92-93 nv4500 here, but its only touching half of the tooth as it needs a 30 tooth gear in it. I was mocking it up to see if it would work but it won't.

Re: PTO swap question

I'm not positive on the year of transmission. Tag on top, correct?

Re: PTO swap question

Shifter tower style help id it .

Early is pop in like 465

Late is 4 bolt newer style .

As said you NEED the correct pto parts for the change over from trans to trans .

Re: PTO swap question

The shifter itself is not bolted in, it's like the 465

Re: PTO swap question

Wow, I must have been lucky!

Almost 40 years ago I bought a PTO out of the junkyard and slapped it on an SM420 and it worked just fine

Re: PTO swap question

I've got a brand new PTO and kit for an early 4500 that I never used. Current orientation is Left side rear facing. I was going to install the 4500 in my tow truck replacing the 465, but I ended up selling the truck before install.

If it was a late 4500, I'd be quite interested in that. Where do you go to buy a new pto kit?
