That doesn't sound right. Unless I misunderstood what was being said.

If you do that wouldn't you just be recirculating the fumes instead of venting it. I think you need to plug both holes on the top of the tank and run the vent from the bung in the filler neck into the open air through a hose. Make sure the vent hose has a couple of loops in it which will keep the smell of gas from escaping.

I have attached another version of the side fill tank with a secondary smaller tube next to the 2 inch. Mine is like this one without the smaller tube

I know the brass port is a rollover vent but should go to something
