white steelies vs Green on a 67 K10

I am finishing up my 67 K10 short stepside and I have the correct 4 nib 6 lug steelies and I was thinking of painting them green and putting on white hubcaps of the 69-72 style. What do you think? The rims on the truck in the photo are not OEM rims. I already own the white hubcaps so they would not cost me anything.I would actually prefer to get some SS hubcaps but they are pricey The photo of the 1972 Chevy is mine also and it is shown with green painted rally wheels and I like the way they work out. So I am trying something along those lines. let me know what you think, You wont hurt my feelings.

And I think I am correct in saying the truck originally came with white rims and no hubcaps at all. I a just trying to step it up a bit. I am willing to consider white rims with no hubcaps at all. Thanks

BTW the two trucks are the same 503 green, just different lighting. One is inside and the other is outside

In my world 67-68 503 K models with white bumpers and wheels are pretty much unbeatable.
When it comes 4x4's that is.

Re: white steelies vs Green on a 67 K10

georgie, your 67 would have come with black wheels and no caps originally (just like the 68 pictured below) - which looks great, but so do the custom approaches you describe. At the end of the day it's all about what looks best to you . Also note that GM never made white caps for Ks either - but some members offer center removal to fit over the locking hub. I only mention these things in case your goal is originality - but for a custom or upgrade look, the sky's the limit! I too like k10 steppers with white steelies, but if I EVER end up with one in the driveway, I'm gonna have to go black and capless ! Love your k10 stepper, very nice truck.

I know what you mean. I debated about using chrome vs white bumpers and went with chrome because I already owned a rear bumper in chrome. It would be relatively easy to make the change to white. Thanks for the input.

Thanks Jocko. I always value your opinions and also your information. For instance I had no idea that black steelies was the original offering. As you can probably see I am breaking a few of the originality rules for appearance sake. The grill borrows things from the 68s but that is because I like the look. I am just trying to find something that looks original even though it may have not been original. I had heard that white caps were not available but I traded for a very nice set of 69-72 1/2 ton caps that someone else had already powder coated white, so once again I am trying to use what I have. I figure I should be able to cut the holes for the front caps myself although I would be glad to have it done by someone who really knows what they are doing. Thanks again for your help and opinion.
BTW this truck was originally red, and not a two-tone. At least I did the correct 67 two-tone paint job, but the original GM red did not turn me on, and since I stripped the whole truck inside and out I decided to change the color. Don't tell anyone.

I'm a big fan of white hubcaps over black wheels, especially on a truck that doesn't have all the optional chrome trim

Do you have any photos of such a paint scheme? Apparently according to Jock black wheels were the original color for k10s. I appreciate your input.

Thanks for keeping the secret. I came without a SPID anyway and it did not even have a 67 glovebox. It does now, and I also kept the original 292 4 speed with the SM420 transmission, and a member sent me an original 4 speed shift knob for free. I bet the ride will be horrible with no PS and no PB but I am looking forward to getting it all the way on the road this year and just driving it!

Re: white steelies vs Green on a 67 K10

I know you weren't asking about originality. You're asking our opinions on your two choices and know you are using later hubcaps. I think color matched wheels look great open, mostly, or with chrome caps. I don't think I'd like them with white caps. I think of the two options you gave I'd go with white wheels with the white caps or color matched and open

I don't have any examples from a K10, but I did the black wheels with white hubcaps on my 63 a couple months ago. There's more pictures in my build thread if you desire to see more than these two pictures

Thanks. That really tells me all I need to know. A picture is worth at least a few hundred words. But now I can see the value in doing it like this. I will give this some thought. I would have never come up with this on my own.

Happy to help! The black wheels with white hubcaps were the standard flavor on the 60-66 trucks. Since my truck is more of a base model truck to begin with, I wanted to go back stock-ish

Thanks Tim, I would prefer to go with your suggestion of color matched rims and chrome hubcaps, but those hubcaps are seriously expensive if you can even find a decent set. I could just go the easy route and get some 6 lug ralley wheels. I like the chrome centers and SS trim rings, but they scream "Modern". Trying to stick with old steelies. I value your input Tim. I bought two of my rims off a friend of yours at Carlisle

Re: white steelies vs Green on a 67 K10

I agree with the others, if you want to deviate from the factory issue, do what fits your taste. Different years did have different configurations, but, there was really no rhyme or reason to what GM did, even they changed their minds several times on wheel colors and hubcaps during this series. One thing that stands out about '67, it was the last year the factory color coordinated wheels on 2WD's if there was a tu tone paint scheme optioned.

Yes! Great info. I did not know that about color matching wheels on 67 2 wd. I have certainly learned throughout my build that 67 is one crazy year. The photo of the red rims with white hubcaps gives me inspiration to do my wheels the same way: but mine will be 503 green with white caps. I need to copy that photo to keep with my truck history. Thanks again.

Cutting out the front hub cap is not overwhelming difficult. Painted caps are steel and with yours already powder coated that might be the only issue as there is a good chance it will chip.

SWEET PHOTO!! I love the truck. It is a rare one, and very similar to my short step-side K10. And I really appreciate seeing the spare tire. I like the look of your truck and I see what you mean about black rims with white caps. Looks very old school. I love that color of green BTW! One of my favorite colors.

Thanks for the encouragement. I kind of figured I might chip the paint. In fact I thought about making the hole slightly oversized and having it powder coated again to seal up the bare metal.
