Here's those pics DBear ... It's a rubber grommet that slips inside the shiny steel can. They fit tight enough to keep the button in place with a square keyway that fits the can that aligns the button with the wheel...

Sorry for the hijack, but what brought me to this site was the Heavy Hauler page in 2014.
My grandfather gave my dad a '67 C50 in 1990 and it was never used by us, so it sat for most of 24 years.
I took the rotting bed sides off and used to for one haul in 2015.
